“Excuse me? You can’t park there. It’s…it’s very clearly not a parking spot, sir.” One of the suited men had made his approach finally.

Bad Mood Banner got out of his car and tossed his keys to the man. “If you scratch it, I’ll know, son.”

“I’m not a valet service, sir. I need you to—”

“Leave him alone. He’s an old man. Just move his car for him. Trust me. You don’t want him moving it. He’ll park it in the confessional.” I looked at Banner from across the back of the car while I let Bogie out. “You’re coming inside, aren’t you?”

He rubbed his hands together. “Yeah, I am. I’m not missing this.”

“Wait a second. I’m not going to move this car.”

I shrugged. “Well then I guess itisa parking spot.”

WhenIenteredthechurch with a dog and an old man, I thought my mom’s head was going to explode. She popped up from where she’d been sitting with my dad like there was a spring under her ass and came rushing at me with her face scrunched up in the way it got before she yelled. Before she could start yelling, though, another suited man stepped in front of me and frowned.

“I’m sorry, ma’am, but you can’t bring that dog in here.”

“It’s an emergency. It won’t take long. I just need to scooch on back to the back and let the bride know her groom is a pig.” I smiled sweetly at Mom as she joined us. “This is my mother. She’ll vouch for me.”

The man turned to Mom and barely missed the angriest face I’d ever seen her make at me. “Do you know this woman?”

Mom gritted her teeth. “I do. She is indeed my daughter, Father Holcomb. I’m very sorry for this.”

I looked at Banner and winced. I hadn’t spotted the collar or I wouldn’t have been so honest. “Okay, excuse me. Here I go, scooching on by you.”

“Again, I can’t let you bring your dog inside.” Father Holcomb wasn’t being very fatherly about Bogie. “This is a house of god, a holy place. I hope you can understand.”

A sharp whistle came from somewhere inside the church and Bogie shot off like a bullet. I barely let go of the leash in time to avoid losing my arm. I knew that whistle. Bogie was going to find Sammy.

I grinned down at Banner. “Did you know they were going to be here?”

“I believe they were invited.”

“By who? Me? That was before we fought.”

“I saw your mother come around with some pretty invitations.” He shrugged. “You’d better get a move on if you’re going to stop this thing.”

“Someone get the dog!” Father Holcomb shot me a dirty look before rushing after Bogie.

Mom slapped my hand and hissed at me. “I’m telling your father about the shed. I can’t believe you brought Bogie here!”

“Don’t, Mom! If you tell him about the shed, I’ll think of something to tell him that you did. I’ll snoop until I figure something out. I don’t want to see the look on his face if he found out about the shed.”

She narrowed her eyes at me. “I’m cutting you out of the will.”

“Hello?” Banner tapped both of us on the arm. “Remember what you’re doing here, ladies.”

“Oh, poo. You and that dog made me forget.” Mom pointed to a hallway to the right of where we were standing. “She’s down there. Last room on the right.”

“Wish me luck!” I stopped and looked back at them. “That sounded too happy. Sorry. I’m just nervous. I’ve never broken up a wedding before.”

“Oh my god, Poppy! Go!” Mom pushed me in the right direction and pulled Banner away with her.

Somehow, in the few minutes I hadn’t been fighting with him, the old man had become my support system and I almost wished he was coming with me. Instead, I walked down the long hallway by myself and found myself outside of a door with very loud pop music coming through it.
