Her laugh was musical. “I’m too turned on to fight with you right now, Cy. I have missed it, though. I found myself arguing with my TV so many times in the last few weeks and I think it was because I missed you.”

My chest ached with the strength of my feelings for her. I opened my mouth to tell her I’d missed her too, but Jude groaned and spoke over me.

“I can’t deal with him if he’s not getting his incessant need to argue worked out with you, Poppy. Don’t leave us again, because I’ll murder Cy. I never noticed how argumentative he is until you were there to argue with him.” Jude took one of the last turns to get to his house. “I missed you for so many fucking reasons, but taking care of these two was up there on my list.”

I grunted. “I missed you too, babygirl.”

“When things settle down, I’m expecting some kind of special treatment for being the only intelligent man in this truck who knew he loved you before you kissed him.” Sam moved his hand toward her pants again and then swore. “How fucking far are we, Jude? I’m dying back here.”

“You can get lots of special treatment, Sammy. I’ll even make them watch while I give it to you.” Poppy swallowed and twisted her hips. “What if I touch myself? It’s been a long three weeks of nothing and I’m dying here.”

“You haven’t touched yourself this whole time?” Jude glanced back at her and then turned onto his street. “Poor Poppy.”

“I was sad. You guys touched yourselves?”

I cleared my throat and busied myself with taking off my seat belt since we were pulling into the driveway. I noticed that no one else responded either and did my best not to make eye contact with anyone else.

“What?”

“It’s weird, Poppy.” Sam groaned. “We don’ttouch ourselves. And we don’t talk about jerking off to one another.”

She had clearly missed arguing because she pushed open her truck door and climbed out, so focused on verbally sparring with Sam that she didn’t notice we had arrived. “Oh, so you don’t touch yourselves? What? You just stroke with your big brain powers? And I’m sorry, but you guys fuck me together. I’m pretty sure there have been positions where a penis has accidentally touched another penis while moving around. But you can’t talk about jerking off? It’s the twenty-first century, guys. You can talk about it.”

“Hell, Poppy! That has never happened and that’s what we’ll go to our graves saying. The shit you say sometimes!” I put my hands on my hips and shuddered. “You’ve lost it.”

“Um, Mr. Allen?”

We all spun around to see a group of teenage boys staring at us with huge eyes and bright red faces. The one who’d spoken stood slightly ahead of the rest and was maybe seventeen.

“Um. My class is selling popcorn to pay for our summer trip. We’re going to New York this year.” He held up a clipboard that he had a death grip on. “You want any popcorn?”

Poppy had gone a shade of red that was slightly worrisome. She laughed awkwardly and stepped forward. “Just popcorn? That’s a lot of popcorn to pay for a big trip like that. You didn’t hear anything strange while we were talking, did you? We were just joking around. You know how it is. And how many bags of popcorn do you need to sell to be done with your part of this?”

Jude groaned into his fist before taking Poppy by the back of her shirt and pulling her into his chest. I watched her face darken even further at what he said and then she practically ran to the front door. After she’d disappeared inside, I looked back at the teens and noticed them nudging each other and whispering.

The second I saw one of them make a motion with his hands about tit size, I walked over to them and folded my arms over my chest. They of course stopped talking as soon as I inserted myself into their group, but I just stared down at them. “Go on. I think you were saying something.”

The kid who’d been gesturing immediately looked at his feet. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t do it again.” I leaned into their group a little more. “If any of you repeats a word of what you overheard, I’ll be sure to come visit you. Do you understand me?”

“Dammit, Cy.” Jude rubbed the back of his neck and nodded at Sam to make me stop scaring the kids while he talked to the lead kid. “I’ll buy all your popcorn, TJ. Mark me down for whatever it is. And if you and your friends make sure to be respectful to our girlfriend, to her face and behind her back, I’ll see what I can do about setting you guys up with a campsite I know of in New York. There’s an adventure course that’ll blow your mind.”

“Are you sure, Mr. Allen?” TJ looked down at his clipboard and held it out. “It’s a lot of popcorn.”

Jude filled out the sales sheet and pressed the clipboard into TJ’s chest. “I’ll drop a check off at your dad’s office on Monday.”

Sam had joined me in intimidating the rest of TJ’s friends. We both just stared them down, daring them to even think about Poppy’s body again.

“Dammit.” Jude grabbed me and Sam and shoved us toward the house. “Sorry, guys. We love our girlfriend and the idea of anyone being rude about her makes us a little crazy. Some more than others.”

Sam lowered his voice. “Cy here just got out of jail after what he did to the last guy who talked about her.”

I bared my teeth and growled a little for show. “He got what was coming to him!”

Jude swore. “Jesus. You know what? Fuck the popcorn. I’ll just pay for everyone’s trip. As long as you guys forget that my friends are lunatics. I’ll call the school and set it up.”

TJ backed up and elbowed his friends. “That’s so cool, Mr. Allen. Thank you!”
