“Lock up after you let me out.”

She nodded.

He stalked out and she closed the door.

“I’m waiting to hear the lock, Addie,” he said through the wood.

She flicked it.

“Goodnight, sunshine.”

She heard the heavy tread of his steps, then she sagged against the door and closed her eyes. She wanted to call him back.

No. Be strong. Be independent.

She turned. The apartment seemed so empty now that he was gone.

She sighed, then walked over to the envelope she’d set on the table. She opened it, her hand trembling.

It was like the others, written with cut out letters from a newspaper.

You’re mine, Adaline.

You can try to get away, but I’ll always find you.

Always.

Soon, we’ll be together.

With a small cry, she screwed the letter into a ball and tossed it. It hit the floor and rolled under her tiny table.

She pressed her hands to her cheeks. For weeks, she’d felt someone watching her on the street, at the bar, at the grocery store. She’d thought she’d imagined it.

Then the notes had started.

Someone was out there, watching her.

And they knew where she lived.

Tell Bram, her brain urged her. He was a security expert. This kind of thing was his job.

No. This person just had to be someone playing a practical joke. He’d lose interest and go away eventually.

Besides, she wasn’t sure she could trust Bram completely yet, either.

Tears welled and she pressed a palm to her belly.

“I’ll protect you, baby. No matter what.” She pressed her back to the wall, and slid down to the floor. She’d give her baby everything she’d never had. Love, security, unwavering support. “I promise.”

CHAPTERTHREE

He hated her apartment.

Bram stepped outside and scowled. It wasn’t the worst street, but it was definitely the shittiest building on it. And her apartment was crap. Her last place hadn’t been great, but she’d decorated it well—pretty pictures, vases, a soft throw blanket on the couch. It had reflected her.

This new place was plain, bland.

Not Addie at all.
