His smile flattened. “Yes.”

“Oh, how exciting,” Hex said. “You’ll get to see if it’s a boy or girl. If you want to find out.”

Bram looked faintly green.

“Yes, I think I do want to find out,” Addie said.

“I’ll go make a few calls,” Bram said. “Nick is going to tail us to the appointment. Make sure it’s safe.”

“Go out the back entrance of the warehouse,” Hex suggested.

“You don’t have to come,” Addie told him. “If you’re too busy.” She didn’t want him to be uncomfortable.

His jaw tightened. “I’m coming.”

* * *

He’d faced downarmed bad guys.

He’d gone into battle.

He’d been under fire numerous times.

But he’d never been this nervous. Bram walked Addie through the doors of the doctor’s office, a hand pressed to her lower back, and resisted the urge to tug on the neckline of his shirt.

There were lots of pregnant women in varying stages. One woman’s stomach looked so large he couldn’t believe she wasn’t toppling over.

As Addie spoke to the receptionist, he looked at a poster on the wall. It was showing something called cervical dilation. He blinked at it in horror, a wave of dizziness hitting him.

“Bram?”

He jerked back to look at Addie. She was lowering herself into a seat. He sat beside her and stared at the blank wall.

Her hand touched his. “You okay?”

“Fine.”

“You don’t look fine.”

He glanced at her. “The guys at the office think I have the best poker face.”

“Not to me.” She squeezed his fingers. “People have babies every day, Bram. It’s going to be fine.”

The thought of Addie actually having the baby made his chest lock. The thought of her in pain…

No.

In fact, people died during childbirth didn’t they? His pulse kicked up a gear.

“Bram, breathe.”

The air rushed into him.

“Adaline Harris?” a nurse called.

Bram followed Addie into a room. There was a bunk, and a fancy machine with a large screen beside it.

“Lie up on the bed, and put the sheet over your lower body,” the nurse said. “Dr. Choudhury will be in soon.”
