Bram helped Addie up on the bed and get settled, then he pulled a chair over. He tried not to fidget.

“Hello.” A woman in her early thirties bounced in. She was curvy with a wide smile, short, black hair, and dark-brown skin. Something about her energy reminded him of Hex.

“How are you today, Addie?

“Fine, thanks, Dr. Choudhury.” Addie smiled. “And this is Bram. He’s the father of the baby.”

“Don’t worry, daddy, there’s nothing to be nervous about.” The doctor pushed Addie’s shirt up. “We’re going to take a little look at your bub, make sure everything is good.”

His gaze snagged on Addie’s cute baby bump covered in smooth skin.

“The gel will be a little cool,” the doctor warned.

“It’s fine.” Addie drew a breath. “I’m excited. And nervous.”

Bram took her hand.

“Relax.” The doctor moved the wand over Addie’s belly. “Okay, let’s take a little look.”

Bram stared at the screen. It was all black and gray shadows, and he couldn’t make any sense of them.

“All right, here we go. There’s your baby.”

Bram stared. He saw it now—head, body, legs kicking.

His heart pounded in his chest. A baby. A real baby.

“Oh, look, Bram.” Addie’s voice was delighted. She squeezed his fingers, and he squeezed back.

It was just a tiny thing. They’d made it. It was resting safely there in Addie’s belly.

A fierce wave of protectiveness hit him.

He’d keep them both safe. No matter what.

Suddenly, it hit him that eventually the baby would be born, and out in the world with all its dangers. His other hand curled into a fist.

“Do you want to know if you’re having a boy or a girl?” Dr. Choudhury asked.

Bram couldn’t breathe. He looked at Addie, saw the shining look in her eyes.

He nodded.

“Yes, please,” Addie said.

“Well, you’re having a little girl,” Dr. Choudhury said.

Okay, now it felt like the world had stopped. Or a bomb had gone off.

A girl.

A baby girl.

He didn’t know anything about little girls. His mouth was dry. He thought of Fiona, heard the echo of her laugh. She’d love this—seeing him rattled and knowing that she’d be an aunt.

Addie squeezed his hand again, her eyes teary, but she was smiling. “We’ve got this. Together.”

Tension eased from him. Addie would help him learn what he needed to know.
