“I don’t care. You just tell me what you need and I’ll give it to you.”

She bit her lip.You. I need you. “You’re the one who was in a gunfight. I should be looking after you.”

“I always look after myself.” He stepped into the elevator.

And that was the problem. He didn’t expect anyone to look after him. He hadn’t had that for a long time. Well, she was going to look after him.

“I know what I want,” she said.

He met her gaze. “Anything.”

CHAPTERTWELVE

Getting out of the shower, Bram swiped the towel over his wet skin and scowled at his reflection in the mirror.

There were quite a few scars on his chest—some from his military days, some still pink and healing from San Francisco.

He was a big brute. He didn’t belong anywhere near Adaline Harris. He heard her singing through the door, out in the kitchen. She was cooking.

That’s what she’d wanted to do, cook him dinner.

She was pregnant, with not one, but two babies, and he wanted her to rest and relax.

With a sigh, he headed for his closet. He knew he didn’t have the ability to say no to her. And Addie wasn’t stupid, so he was pretty sure she knew that. He pulled on jeans and a T-shirt.

As he reached the kitchen, amazing smells hit him.

Addie was stirring something on the stove. The table was set, and candles were burning in the center. What the hell? He didn’t own candles.

“Smells good,” he said.

She squeaked and whirled. “For a big man, you move very quietly.” Then she just stared at him.

He frowned, looking down. His jeans were old and faded at the stress points, and his T-shirt was just plain black. “What’s wrong?”

“I…” She shook her head. “I’ve never seen you in jeans before. Or a T-shirt that hugs all your muscles.”

It was true. He’d always come to her straight from work and had been wearing a suit.

“I mean, you look fine in a suit.” She fiddled with her hair. “Like really great in a suit, but this works well, too. Really well.”

He felt very uncharacteristic heat filling his cheeks. He cleared his throat. “Where did you get the candles?”

“Oh, Hex. She and Lainie, Nick’s fiancée, dropped them off. Lainie seems really nice. I can’t believe she’s a hot shot CEO. They also left this—” with a flourish, Addie lifted a bottle of amber fluid off the counter.

It was a bottle of Redbreast 15-year-old. His favorite Irish whiskey.

“Have some.” She beamed at him as she filled a glass with ice. “Do you put anything with it? Coke? Water?”

“No.”

She poured it into the glass. “Lainie mentioned you’ve drunk Nick under the table several times.” She handed him the glass.

He took it. “Wolf is a lightweight.”

With a smile, she watched him take a sip, then she hurried back to the stove. “The steaks are almost ready. Sorry they aren’t cooked on the grill, but the griddle pan doesn’t do a bad job. Thanks for getting the groceries. I haven’t had steak in forever. I made my own lemon rice, and green beans with walnuts in them with a balsamic dressing. It’s delicious.”

He loved it when she chattered in that excited voice. “You like cooking.”
