Daniel rolled his dark eyes. “Eavesdropping, Hex?”

The tiny, dark-haired guru of all things tech at Sentinel Security turned and grinned. “Hello, I’m a hacker, remember? I know everything.” The lights caught on the pink streaks at the bottom of her hair. She grabbed a small bottle of juice and a granola bar, and smiled at Addie. “Hi, I’m Jet, but everyone around here calls me Hex.”

“Hi. I’m Adaline, but most people call me Addie.” Addie tilted her head. “You have one blue eye and one green.”

“I do. I’m one of a kind.”

“Sorry.” Addie waved a hand. “I’m always blurting things out. Your eyes are pretty.”

Hex smiled. “Thanks. Saskia’s mentioned you.” Hex handed the drink and bar over. “Plus Bram here gave me your details when he asked me to track you down.”

Addie froze. “He did?”

Hex just smiled and nodded.

As Addie sipped her drink, Bram fought the urge to haul her into his arms.

“Okay, if you need anything else, you just call.” Daniel stood, and met Bram’s gaze.

He nodded at the doctor. Then he turned to Hex. “Hex, Addie said she called the Sentinel Security office and left me messages. She also called my cellphone. I never got anything.”

The hacker frowned, toying with the pink ends of her hair. “You talked to someone in reception upstairs?”

Addie nodded. “A woman. I tried his cellphone and left messages. It just beeped.”

“All the cellphones are redirected to the office when the guys are out of the country. Only approved numbers get through.” Hex frowned. “You still should’ve gotten her messages.”

“I came into the office as well,” Addie said. “The woman upstairs…was very polite. The first two times she told me Bram was unavailable. The third time—” Addie looked down at her lap “—she told me it was time to stop embarrassing myself.”

Bram growled, got out of his chair, and knelt by Addie. He grabbed her hand. “I swear I didn’t know.”

“I’ll look into this,” Hex murmured, before she left them alone.

He stroked the soft skin at Addie’s wrist. “I looked for you when I got back.”

He’d been desperate to see her. He’d even bought her flowers—beautiful yellow roses. They’d reminded him of Addie’s happy personality. He’d never met anyone who could always see the positive in everything like her.

“You’d left your apartment, your phone was disconnected. I looked for you at your show.” He looked down at the floor. He remembered that after realizing she was gone, he’d tossed the flowers in a dumpster. “I figured you didn’t want to see me. You knew where to find me, and I thought you’d come to your senses and weren’t interested.”

“Bram—”

He looked up. She was biting her lip.

“I was so afraid when I found out I was pregnant, then I was excited thinking about the baby, then I was terrified when I couldn’t reach you. I figured you’d gotten what you wanted and—”

He growled.

She cleared her throat. “I’ve worked hard the last two months to find some stability. By myself.”

“You’re not alone anymore.”

Her lips firmed. “I’m the only person I can trust. I’m going to make sure he or she has everything they need. I…have to depend on me. For my baby.”

“Ourbaby.” God, he felt a little sick. The poor kid was stuck with him, and he had no idea how to be a father.

“You look green just saying that,” she whispered.

“I never wanted kids. I need to…adjust to the idea.”
