“Well, I need to adjust, too. I’ve gotten used to being on my own.” She rubbed her temple. “It’s been a crazy evening, and I’d like to go home and rest.”

Bram wanted to argue. He didn’t want her out of his sight.

But the look she gave him was pure steel. Addie was tougher than people realized.

With a nod, he rose. “I’ll take you home.”

“Thank you.”

“But Addie—” he waited until she met his gaze “—from now on, you aren’t alone, and I’m looking after you. Both of you.”

* * *

Addie triedto control her nerves as Bram pulled his big, black Dodge Ram to a stop down the block from her apartment building in Alphabet City.

It wasn’t the best building on the street, but the tiny apartment was all she could afford. She was trying to save everything she could for the baby’s arrival.

Still, she didn’t want Bram to see the place. She knew he hadn’t loved her last apartment—he’d complained it wasn’t secure enough—and it had been much nicer.

“I can walk from here—”

“I’m seeing you to the door, Addie.”

“There’s no need. I don’t want to put you out.”

He ignored her, knifed out of the truck, and circled the hood.

Her gaze snagged on him. She loved the way he moved. He was so big and tall and broad, and she knew that body was solid muscle, but he moved quietly. His red hair was the first thing she’d noticed about him. And he always had stubble on his jaw.

She’d first met him when she’d come back to New York after being rescued. Killian had sent Bram to check on her and ensure her apartment was secure. She’d been fascinated by him. He was solid, steady, and strong. She knew some people found him intimidating. It probably didn’t help that he was always grumpy. It hadn’t taken her long to learn that scowling was second nature to him.

But he’d never intimidated her.

No, he’d made her feel safe for the first time in her life.

He’d kept dropping by to check on her. She’d make him coffee and they’d talk. Or rather she’d talk and ramble on. Bram wasn’t much of a talker, but he’d seemed to like listening to her. She’d started to bake things for him—Irish soda bread, scones, Guinness cake. She’d researched every Irish recipe she could find.

And she’d desperately wanted to kiss him.

For a while, she’d believed he wasn’t attracted to her. He rarely touched her.

Then she’d spilled coffee on his shirt and fumbled to blot it with a towel. She’d found herself on her knees in front of him…and she’d watched the instant Bram’s control had snapped.

She fought back a shiver at the memory. He’d had her naked and crying out his name seconds later.

Like an idiot, she’d tumbled head over heels in love with Bram O’Donovan.

Until he’d crushed her heart like glass.

Or had he?

Turn it off for now, Addie. She was tired and wrung out. Pregnancy, and all the emotion of seeing Bram, and her other little problem that she tried not to think about, had taken it all out of her.

As Bram opened the door, she scanned the street. No one seemed to be watching them.

She relaxed a little, then Bram grabbed her arm and lifted her out of the vehicle.

She almost moaned from being so close to him. Her heart and her brain were still wary, but her hormone-riddled body wanted to press her face to the bare skin at the base of his throat, and breathe him in.
