They drove for a while, the dirt road rough in places. Addie gripped the door to try and stop herself bouncing around. Kozlov finally turned off, following a rough track through thick trees. She watched an animal—a deer—dart across the road and into the bushes.

Then, the cabin came into view. It wasn’t huge. It was made of brown logs with a green roof, and a large, wraparound porch. It was nestled into the trees beside a lake.

In any other circumstances, she’d think it was a nice place to visit.

The truck stopped. Another man, this one with a rifle resting on his shoulder, appeared from around the corner of the cabin. He wore jeans, a drab-green shirt, and a ratty ball cap.

Kozlov got out and opened the door for her. “Come. See your new home.”

Addie gingerly slid out of the truck.

“See the beautiful view.” He waved an arm proudly.

She took in the stunning mountains that sat on the other side of a small lake.

“I’ll show you the cabin.” He took her arm, calling out to the other two men.

She tried to pull free, but his grip tightened painfully.

“You will show me respect, Adaline, especially in front of my men.” His tone was clipped. “I’ve done so much for you.”

“You’re crazy. You’vekidnappedme. I don’t want to be with you.”

His face hardened, and he dragged her toward the building.

“Don’t try to run. My men will be around. Plus, I have lots of security features on my land. If you run into any…boom.”

Addie’s stomach dropped.

“There are bears and other wildlife around, as well.” He towed her up the steps and opened the front door.

The inside was cozy, but plain. There were simple brown couches in the living area, a round, wooden table with four chairs, and a snug kitchen. The window over the sink had a view of the lake.

“There are two bedrooms, but you will sleep with me,” Kozlov announced.

Addie felt sick at the thought. “No.”

He shook her. “You will do as I say.”

“I’m not a doll, or possession. I make my own choices.”

He moved fast, backing her up, and her pulse jumped. Her shoulder blades hit the wall, and he penned her in with his much bigger body.

“You’remine. That’s all you are. You get no choices. You will obey me or…” His hand brushed over her stomach.

Rage pooled inside her and she glared at him. She wouldn’t let him hurt her babies.

He leaned closer and she felt his hot breath on her cheek. She turned her head, and his lips touched her jaw.

“You can go to the bedroom and think.” He stepped back. “Don’t go outside. If you run, I will hunt you down.” He cocked his head. “You will forget him, milaya. I promise.”

He shoved her in the bedroom, and slammed the door.

A sob welled. Addie’s chest was so tight. She made herself look at the room. There was a wooden-framed bed, with plaid covers. The window had another pretty view that she was too sick to take in.

She wrapped her arms around herself.

“It’s okay, babies. It’s going to be okay.”
