The need to escape thumped hard inside her.

Wait. Think, Addie. She forced herself to take a few breaths.

She pushed the curtain at the window aside and peered outside. She needed to avoid the guards.

She was horribly aware that there were booby-traps out there. She’d need to be very careful, but she sure as hell wasn’t staying here.

It was still light outside, even though it was getting late. She was thankful it wasn’t winter. She didn’t want to be running around in the dark. Still, could she make it back to Anchorage? Despair hit her. She knew it was dangerous to wander out in this wild wilderness.

She rubbed her belly. “We’re getting out of here, babies. We’ve got this.”

She spotted a guard. He was strolling slowly, walking past the cabin. He didn’t stop or slow down.

Carefully, she cracked open the front door. There was no sign of the other guard anywhere. She hoped he’d turned in for the night.

Addie crept out, praying the steps wouldn’t creak under her weight. She kept her gaze on the guard’s back. She reached the bottom and angled away from him, trying to move quietly.

How long would Kozlov stay unconscious?

Her hindbrain screamed at her.Run. Run. Run.

She looked at the rough track leading up to the cabin. She knew there were no booby-traps on the road, but it was also too open. They’d see her and chase her down easily.

She had to risk going through the trees. Her stomach churned.

The guard stopped. She had to go.Now.

Addie turned and ran into the trees.

They swallowed her up, and she had no idea where she was going. She just knew that she had to get away from Kozlov.

She ran into a little clearing. A circle of churned-up earth sat in the center of it, and she skirted around it. Metal glinted from inside the dirt.

Crap. It had to be one of Kozlov’s “security measures.” She gave it a wide berth and kept going.

Branches slapped at her, and twigs snapped under her shoes.

“Adaline!”

The angry bellow echoed through the trees.

Kozlov was conscious.

Fear filled her, her pulse fluttering. She ran faster, holding her stomach. She knew when he caught her, he wouldn’t be gentle. He’d punish her for escaping.

She couldn’t give up.

She raced through the trees. She just had to keep running.

Suddenly, something caught her foot, and she tripped over. She hit the ground hard, turning to her side at the last minute.

Oomph. Dazed, she looked down. There was a wire loosely tangled around her ankle.

Oh, crap. She kicked free, then pushed up, and kept running.

She hadn’t gone far when—

Boom.
