He’d been alone when his ma and Fiona had been taken. Eighteen, untrained. He realized now that there was nothing he could’ve done. Their fate had been sealed by the three murderers who’d taken their lives.

But now, Bram had a team, he had skills. He’d save the woman he loved, and their growing babies.

He’d love her with everything he had, and learn what he needed to about being a husband and father.

Addie would help him.

His friends would help him.

“Guys, there’s something buried in the clearing just ahead of you,” Hex said. “Veer west.”

Bram adjusted course.

Hold on just a little longer, sunshine, then you can hold on to me.

CHAPTEREIGHTEEN

Addie ran through the trees, her chest heaving.

Kozlov was coming. She could hear him. He was hunting her.

She paused behind a tree, trying to hear over the thud of her heart. Her ears were still ringing from the explosion. She sucked in air.

“You’ve got this, Addie,” she whispered.

Then she heard something. Her head jerked up. Something or someone was moving close by.

She bit her lip, spun, and ran in the other direction.

The noise followed her. Something crashed through the undergrowth. She whirled, then froze.

A black bear ambled out of the trees.

Oh. God.

Her blood ran cold. The bear paused and she felt like it was glaring at her.

Slowly, she backed up a step. It took a step closer.

Addie fought the urge to run. Then she heard the sound of gunfire, not far away. Startled, the bear spun and ran off into the trees.

She turned and kept going in the opposite direction to the bear.

The ground sloped downward, and she skidded. Then she felt a flare of pain in her ankle, and fell.

Sitting on her butt in the dirt, she fought back her rising panic. What else could go wrong? She moved her leg.

“Ow, ow, ow.” She rubbed her ankle. It hurt, but she knew it wasn’t broken or badly sprained. Dancing had taught her how to gauge her injuries. She’d danced on sore ankles too many times to count.

She had to get up, she couldn’t stop.

“I’m coming, Adaline.” Kozlov’s voice rang through the trees.

She gritted her teeth, gripped a nearby tree trunk, and hauled herself up. The asshole was taunting her.

Well, she wasn’t letting him get to her.

She kept running. Her ankle throbbed, but she tried to block it out. Then she heard a strange whirring sound. She looked around, then up. A speck of black was floating above her, silhouetted against the darkening sky.
