She gasped. It was a drone. Like the ones Hex used.

God, was Bram here with the team?

Hope burst through her, giving her a surge of energy. She hobbled down the hill, barely feeling her ankle now. She just had to hold on a little bit longer.

The ground flattened out, and she picked up speed. She heard a sound behind her.

“You can’t escape me, Adaline.”

God, Kozlov was getting closer.

She reached a small clearing and sprinted through it.

Twang.

Something hit her and wrapped around her body. She was yanked off her feet.

She cried out. Panting, she found herself hanging a few feet off the ground, wrapped in a rope net.

She’d been caught in a trap.

No.No.

Addie wriggled and tried to get free, but managed to do nothing more than just swing slightly back and forth.

Dammit.

She squeezed her eyes shut, choking back her panic. Bram was coming. She was sure of it.

A twig cracked nearby, and she opened her eyes.

Kozlov stepped out of the trees, a big, black gun in his hand.

Her mouth went dry.

His gaze locked on her. “Adaline, I am very disappointed.”

She stayed silent.

He strode closer, his eyes alight, and his face twisted. “The man who dared touch you is here.”

Everything inside her leaped. Bram was here. He was coming.

Kozlov’s scowl deepened, but Addie couldn’t stop her smile.

“You have not appreciated what I’ve done for you, for us,” he said.

“I never wanted this, or you.”

He nodded slowly.

“Please, just let me go,” she said.

“No. But I will leave. They won’t ever catch me, but…you are mine, Adaline.”

Dammit. He wasn’t going to give up. Her stomach sank.

He leaned closer to her. “And if I can’t have you, no one will.”
