She blinked.What?

She watched him slide the gun away. Her hands twined around the rope. “Ilya—”

He shook his head. “It’s too late, Adaline.” He pulled out a hunting knife.

Her lungs locked. It was huge, with a serrated blade.

“We will be together in the next life,” he said.

“Please, don’t do this. I’m pregnant—” She struggled, sending the net swinging wildly. “Please.”

He lifted the knife.

A large shape sprinted out of the trees, flew through the air, and tackled Kozlov to the ground.

The two men went down, wrestling in the dirt.

Addie sucked air into her lungs, fighting back a wild rush of panic.

It was Shade. His tawny hair had come loose, spilling around his shoulders as he punched Kozlov.

The fight was brutal, and deep grunts filled the clearing.

Kozlov got up on one knee and sliced out with his knife.

Shade hissed, pressing a hand to his bicep. Blood oozed between his fingers. Then he whirled and jumped. His hard kick sent a boot slamming into Kozlov’s face.

Kozlov cursed and pulled back. He yanked something off his belt and held it up.

Oh, no. “Shade, he’s got a grenade!”

Shade dove, and tackled Kozlov again. His hand snapped out, and she heard Kozlov’s wrist break.

Her captor roared and dropped the grenade.

Shade lunged and caught it. He spun and threw it like a star baseball pitcher.

It sailed into the trees.

And detonated.

The shockwave rippled through the air, and she closed her eyes.God.

Kozlov straightened, his gun in his hand. He smiled, blood on his teeth.

Shade started to move, but she knew he couldn’t outrun a gun.

Bang. Bang.

Addie jerked.No.

But it was Kozlov who jolted. Bram walked out of the trees, a rifle in his hands, with the butt pressed to his shoulder. He had it aimed straight at Kozlov.

He fired again, and Kozlov dropped his gun, then fell to his knees.

“Mine,” Kozlov gritted out.

“She was never yours.” Bram fired again and Kozlov toppled.
