“Yeah. We’re lovers.” I said with a small smile which came out shaky because of his expression. The suspicion in his eyes deepened.

Shit.

“Why don’t I check on the food and give you two some time to reconnect?” Alexander offered.

I wanted to tell him that there was no need so he wouldn’t leave me alone. I gave him a pleading look mixed with a glare as I couldn’t decide whether I wanted to plead with him to stay or glare at him for even thinking of leaving me alone.

However, Alexander either didn’t catch my signal or deliberately ignored it and bent down to gently kiss my forehead before leaving. Tony followed after him, shooting me a look of sympathy.

I turned to my father to see him watching Alexander and Tony’s departing backs with suspicion in his eyes. He turned back to me, and I was startled by the worry in his eyes.

“Tell me the truth, Aryana.”

What?

“Are you okay? Are you safe here? Are you being held here against your will? Do I need to call the police? Were you kidnapped?”

My mind went blank at the flurry of questions my father asked. I couldn’t even begin to fathom what could have made him think I had been kidnapped.

Was I safe here? It was quite an ironic question, seeing as I was the safest here, but his arrival jeopardized it, and we would have to move again. I wasn’t bothered as it was a sacrifice I would gladly make again.

Was I being held here against my will? Not really. I didn’t want to drop everything and come here, but I had no choice if it meant staying alive. It wasn’t bad, and I enjoyed staying here with Alexander.

Did he need to call the police? I wanted to laugh. Not. There was no need for him to call the police for two reasons. One, because I was safe and happy here. I doubted the police could do anything, even if they were called.

Was I kidnapped? No. Was I almost kidnapped? Probably.

Out of all the answers I had supplied in my head, were there any I could tell my dad? None at all, except the last one. I wasn’t kidnapped.

Ever since my mother died of her illness, my father had become more protective of me and concerned about my health, so I guessed it was normal for my father to be concerned about me.

“Yes, Dad. I’m fine. I’m happy here. Yes, I’m safe, and no, you don’t need to call the police, and I wasn’t kidnapped.” I answered with an amused chuckle. “Seriously? Would you be here if I was kidnapped? Would I be standing before you and untied if I was kidnapped?”

“You can’t blame me for the asking, Ary.” I was nostalgic at hearing my father call me by the nickname he’s been calling me since he and his mom adopted me. “You looked tense and couldn’t even tell me who he was. I thought something was wrong.”

I hugged him. I could understand why he would have that impression, but he misunderstood.

“I wasn’t tense because of that. I was worried because I didn’t know how you would react. I feared your reaction if I told you that Alexander and I were together.”

“Alexander, huh? So, that’s his name.” My dad muttered.

I snickered at his expression. “Next time, you might want to let him introduce himself.”

My dad fondly huffed and rubbed my hair. “I’ll do that next time.” He rolled his eyes. “But why would you be afraid of my reaction?”

“Because you don’t seem to like him,” I answered.

“Whatever gave you that impression?”

I gave him an unimpressed look. He wasn’t fooling anybody. He held his hands up in mock surrender.

“What did he ever do to you? You’re just seeing him for the first time today. I probed.

“He’s gotten together with my baby daughter, that’s what.” He grumbled.

I laughed and playfully smacked my father on his arm. “Come on! That’s such a lame reason.”

“Hey! When you become a mother, you’ll understand that my reason is justified. He’s taking my baby girl away from me.”
