I frowned.
“What?”
“You’ve changed,Alessandro. I never thought I would see you become so enamored with a woman. I saw the way you looked at her earlier. You care about her, don’t you? Dare I say it?”
“Say what?”
“Ti sei innamorato di lei.You love her, don’t you.”
I didn’t say anything. Not because I didn’t want to answer but because I didn’t know the answer.
“Nonlo so. I know I’ve never felt this deeply for any woman before. I don’t know if it is love, but I do know that I care about her and want always to make her happy.”
“Don’t worry,fratello. You’ll get there. Tony patted my shoulder, talking as if he knew something I didn’t. I rolled my eyes.
Tony had already told me everything was going well back home and that the war was slowly turning in our favor against the Saconne, so there was nothing to worry about there.
Time passed by as Tony and I watched the tv. My mind wasn’t on what was on the screen. It kept wandering back to Aryana and her father and how they were still talking. Was everything all right? I didn’t need to worry for long because Walter stood at the living room entrance and beckoned me over.
I didn’t hesitate to go over it.
“How is she?” I asked when I didn’t see Aryana anywhere.
Walter looked amused when he saw how eager I was to look for Aryana.
“Calm down. Everything is fine. She went to wash her face. The silly girl said she didn’t want to see me off while looking ugly.”
“She’s not ugly,” I replied automatically.
“No, she’s not.” He agreed.
“You’re leaving now? There’s still dessert in the fridge. I quickly offered.
“Nah, it’s okay. She told me that you two are traveling tomorrow. I want her to get enough rest for the trip tomorrow. I can always come back when you guys get back.
There was silence for a while.
“I can’t say I was happy when you revealed the news, especially when she later told me that her pregnancy resulted from a night without protection. It meant she would have to put all she was working for on hold.”
I didn’t say anything and waited for him to finish.
“But then she told me how she wanted to keep the baby and how eager she was now to look forward to your baby's arrival. She also spoke about you, you know.”
My eyes lit up with interest. What did she say about me?
“She spoke of how much you cared about her, and I can see that you truly do with your actions.” Walter flashed a tiny smile. “I will admit, I was skeptical about you, and when I heard your age, I was uncomfortable with your relationship. I had my reservations, and while I still have them, I can see you’re not bad. You truly cherish my daughter. I see the way you look at her. You’re not a bad match. it doesn’t mean I still won’t keep my eyes on you.” He warned, but I was only focused on his blessings.
He approved of our relationship. I thought I didn’t care before, but hearing him agree made something inside of me sigh in relief.
“Thank you.”
“I’d do anything for my daughter’s happiness. I hope you’ll do the same.”
“I will.” I firmly stated.
Walter stared deep into my eyes as if he was searching for something. I didn’t know what he was searching for, but he must have found it because he leaned back and grunted in satisfaction.
“I’m done.”
