I found it quite ludicrous how the other families had any right to get any share in the territory as they had done nothing but sit back as the Romano family had struggled. Never mind. It didn’t matter. There was nothing I could do, and I didn’t understand the inner workings of the mafia.

I sighed and stood up. My eyelids felt heavy from how much I’d been watching over him, but I didn’t want to sleep.

I entered the bathroom and splashed water on my face. Wiping my face clean, I stared at my reflection in the mirror. I looked tired. There were bags under my eyes, but other than that, I looked healthy. Not that I had a choice. There were several times when I didn’t feel like eating, but I had to remember that it wasn’t only my life that I was responsible for.

I walked back out to the bedroom but froze in my tracks.

Alexander was sitting on the bed, looking around blearily before smiling, when his gaze landed on me.

A sob escaped my mouth before I could stop it.

“Aryana?” He looked so worried, and…he was awake!

I couldn’t stop myself from running over and hugging Alexander. My body shuddered with the force of my sobs, and I buried my face in his neck.

“Aryana…”

“Don’t ever do that again!” I knew I sounded like a blubbering fool, but I didn’t care. I kept repeating my words, telling him never to leave me again.

“I’m sorry.” He said while carding his fingers through my hair, but I didn’t focus on his apology as I rushed to say the one thing I had been desperate to say.

I leaned back and stared into his gray eyes that I could only see because he was finally awake!

“I love you!” I blurted out.

I could see my statement shocked Alexander, who was stunned into silence.

“Wh-what?” He croaked.

I descended into giggles. I honestly couldn’t stop it. I was just so overwhelmed with many emotions about Alexander waking up.

“I love you,” I said, emphasizing each word and leaning closer. “I love you,” I whispered.

“Seeing you unconscious and bleeding out scared me. The thought that you would never wake up terrified me, and then you were unconscious for two weeks and wouldn’t wake up!”

“I was unconscious for two weeks?” Alexander was astonished, but I ignored his question because I just needed to tell him about my feelings in case this was all temporary.

“And seeing how you would never wake up, I was lonely and scared, and I thought about all the times we had spent together, and I realized that I had fallen in love with you, but I didn’t know why I couldn’t say it, and then I regretted it and-,”

Dry lips blocked the rest of my words from coming out. I didn’t hesitate to kiss back. It was amazing! I didn’t care that his lips were parched or that he hadn’t brushed his teeth in two weeks. I only watched him kissing me back, something he could do because he was awake!

We slowly drifted apart.

“Hi,” I whispered, afraid I would start rambling again.

“Hi.” He said back to me. We stared deeply at each other, cataloging our features as if afraid we would forget with time.

“I missed you.”

“I missed you too.”

I smiled widely, the first smile I had given in two weeks, and leaned down to kiss him again. Just then, the doors burst open, and in rushed Tony and Marcelo, who had their guns drawn out.

“What happened? We were informed there was shouting and…” Tony’s voice trailed off. He and Marcelo’s eyes widened when they landed on a very much awake Alexander.

Alexander was grinning widely. “I miei fratelli.”

My jaw was aching from how much I was smiling from seeing the normally composed Tony and playful Marcelo rush to embrace Alexander.
