Sparrow’s wife spun her desk chair, a smile lighting up her face. “Oh hey, Overstreet. I didn’t know you were here.”

“You’re working late.”

She leaned forward in her seat and pressed both palms to her lower back in a stretch. “You’re right. I need to get up and move around more. Montgomery would be upset that I’ve been sitting here so long.” She pushed to her feet and rubbed her spine with both sets of knuckles. The weight of her own pregnancy must be causing her back to ache.

His fingers tingled at the thought of giving Lena massages to ease the strain of carrying their own child.

“Can I do anything for you?” he asked Gia. “Get you some water?”

“Water would be great. Wow, is that the time? No wonder I’m starving.”

If she was hungry, that meant Lena probably was too.

He crossed the room to a mini-fridge and pulled out a bottle of water. When he handed it to her, he noted the changes in her appearance since he’d last seen her. Her hair was thicker and shinier. Her fuller face gave her a soft look. Would the same happen to the angled planes of Lena’s?

His heart flexed.

“I have something to ask you, Gia,” he blurted.

She screwed off the water cap and took a sip. “I’ll help if I can.”

He nodded but still hesitated. Outing Lena to the wife of the commanding officer of Alpha was a huge risk.

She eyed him and then said softly, “Is this about Lena?”

He gulped. “What have you heard?”

She shrugged. “Rumors get around.”

“You know that we were married,” he stated.

She nodded.

“And…you know that…” He left the question hang.

A long pause pulsated between them.

Then Gia compressed her lips. “I know. I’m the one who showed her how to combat the morning sickness.” Her voice was barely a murmur, and he was filled with affection for this woman who, with a short conversation, could break the woman he loved with the secret she knew. But he knew Gia never would.

“It’s my baby.” His own voice cracked on the words. The first admission that he was going to be a father.

Her eyes glimmered, and she swiped at a tear that trickled from the corner. “Stupid hormones. But I can sense the struggle between you both. I know Lena must be panicked, considering her situation. I’ll do anything to help ease the way for both of you.”

He swallowed the lump of emotion clogging his throat. “Thank you. It means a lot. Right now I’m worried that she’s been working long hours and probably hasn’t eaten. I want to get her some food, but I don’t know what won’t…”

“Make her puke?” Gia issued a soft laugh. She pivoted to the computer and set her fingers on the keyboard. When she pulled up a menu for a local place he knew Lena loved and selected a few items that should settle in Lena’s stomach, his chest welled with gratitude.

Gia spun from the computer again, stare fixed on him. “There you go. Just have to go pick it up now.”

“Thank you, Gia. Seriously.”

“Of course. It’s a small thing I can do to help.”

He started to walk out.

“Overstreet!”

He swung back. She stood with one hand curled around her growing belly, what must be such a beautiful vision to the father, Sparrow.
