He wasn’t even winded as he lifted a finger into the air to indicate he was number one and strutted away from her.

“You didn’t win, Overstreet,” she called to his retreating back.

As he turned the corner, he tossed her a wink. “Didn’t I, Lena?”

FOURTEEN

Slade took a seat at the conference table alongside Apollo but kept his gaze trained on Lena as she walked to the front of the room to speak with Sparrow.

Her spine was straight, and she walked with all the confidence of the warrior she was. She thought he didn’t recognize that side of her, but she was wrong. Unlike her, he also saw the vulnerable part, the portion that could be cut down—destroyed.

That was the driving force behind his need to protect her, which came at the price of her wrath.

He strained to catch their low voices. He wasn’t sure what Sparrow was asking her to do, but Slade didn’t like the thought of not being looped into Lena’s orders. What if she was sent after Ramon’s son? She was carrying Slade’s child, goddammit.

On the other hand, the son might not even be a threat—it was entirely possible that he didn’t share his father’s moral shortcomings. But until Blackout knew differently, caution was the number one order of business.

He could be a threat to Lena, and by default, their child.

He clenched a fist on his thigh while letting his gaze roam over Lena. She’d quickly changed into a fresh set of clothes. The black T-shirt clung to her trim body, and her cargo pants accentuated the heart shape of her ass, which had Slade’s balls tightening with need.

His brain may have gotten the memo that he wasn’t seeing any action in between the sheets until they knew what the outcome of this meeting, but his cock did not. He pressed his fist to his mouth.

Lena’s scent still clung to his fingers, tormenting him enough. But watching her conduct herself with so much confidence when talking to her CO had him aching.

Was she glowing? She was definitely glowing back in that alley. The woman was fucking incandescent.

The sound of Apollo clearing his throat tugged Slade’s attention away from his beautiful woman. Apollo leaned in to talk, but just then Sparrow demanded their attention.

“Graham will be sharing more on what went down in Puerto Vallarta.” He waved a hand in her direction, and she stepped into the center of the room.

She launched into a discussion of Ramon and how he tested her in the car that day. Evidently, she passed because he took his son’s video call.

“The question still remains is whether or not his son is actually part of the family business. Is he a threat?”

Everyone was riveted to her as she continued assessing how likely Ramon’s son was to be involved in his father’s line of work and how an op would likely play out depending on different factors.

Damn, the woman commanded the room. Each point she made about the situation amazed the hell out of him. So poised. So intelligent.

So fucking hot.

Apollo’s low voice broke through Slade’s infatuation. “So, how’s your operation going?”

Slade started to respond in a whisper, but on his opposite side, Frost twisted his head. “There’s an op? What am I missing?”

“Not official.” Slade spoke in a murmur but still sent a look at Lena to make sure she didn’t notice he wasn’t listening to her big report.

A voice came from behind him as Mustang got in on it. “You gonna fill us in on the deets about this op, Overstreet?”

“It’s Operation: Win Lena Back,” Apollo cut in.

The object of their discussion settled her stare directly on Slade and the group around him. They all shut up for a moment.

She angled her jaw and continued on, talking strategy and timeframes.

“We want in on the op,” Frost whispered.

“Sign me up,” came the voice from his back. When he twisted, he met Mustang’s stare.
