“Put the bag in the car,” I ordered. “And then come here.”

She obediently nodded her head. I bit back a sigh. I couldn’t wait until I put some fight in her. Fuck knew she needed some. She was too obedient, too good, too perfect. This world would one day chew her up and spit her out, leaving her a broken shell.

I, at least, didn’t want to do that. I just wanted to destroy everything her father had spent eighteen years creating.

I wanted to taint her soul. And as soon as I put a drop of black on it, it would spread through her like poison. It always did.

She made her way over to me, and I beeped the car locked. She gulped. If she’d been thinking she could hop back in the car when I wasn’t looking, she was wrong. Her only way out was throughme.

I gripped her long, blonde hair in my fist and yanked her head back. Tears built in her eyes and one slid down her cheek. I leaned forward and licked it up, my cock jumping at the taste of her, especially when she blew out a shaky breath, clearly liking it, even if she was confused as to why she did.

I leaned back up, staring down into those baby-blue depths. “You’re going to enter the maze, and you’re going to run.” She shook her head, but I yanked her head back more. She squeaked in pain, her hands coming up to wrap around my wrist. A menacing grin tugged at my lips, and she shivered, more tears sliding down her cheeks. “You’ve only got two ways out, little blondie. Either you miraculously find your own way out of the corn, or I carry you out when I’m done wreaking havoc on your sweet, untouched little body.”

She whimpered, trying to shake her head again, but she couldn’t move. “No,” she choked out.

“No, Lillian?” I asked softly, leaning in closer to her. She whimpered again. “I’ll bend you over my knee right here and spank your pretty little ass blistering red and then make you run while it’s throbbing. Want to try again?”

She was full-on sobbing now, but she didn’t say anything else. I hummed. “Good girl.” I released her but then gripped her neck, tighteningalmostto the point of bruising, but not quite. I licked at her lobe, and she breathily moaned before slapping a hand over her mouth. A dark chuckle spilled from my lips.

I couldn’t wait to destroy her soul.

I placed my lips right at her ear. “Run, little blondie,” I whispered.

Then, I stepped back, releasing her, and watched as she took off, running like the devil himself was after her.

In a way…he was.

ChapterSeven

Lillian

As soon as he released my throat, I sprinted into the maze, my feet carrying me away from him as fast as they could. My heart was racing so fast, it hurt. I could barely suck air into my lungs, but like hell was I stopping. I would die of exhaustion and lack of air before I ever let my feet stop.

I had to get away from him. I could somehow find my way out of this maze, right? It couldn’t be too confusing.

I didn’t dare turn back to see if he was following me. I knew if I looked over my shoulder, I’d trip or run into a wall of corn.

Vomit rose in my throat. I was in the middle of a cornfield. Ever since I watched snippets ofChildren of the Cornat a sleepover in elementary school, I’d had a crippling fear of them. And now, Amadeus had thrown me right in the middle of one.

I was going to be sick.

I tripped, sprawling on my hands and knees, tears welling in my eyes when I felt a stick cut into my hand. I hiccupped and swiped at my nose as I scrambled to my feet, rushing forward again.

I screamed when Amadeus suddenly appeared in front of me. Spinning around, I rushed back in the direction I’d been coming from, black spots dancing in my vision. My side was aching something fierce, and I could barely see anything through the tears running down my cheeks.

Why couldn’t I find the strength to run away from home, from all this bullshit surrounding me? Why couldn’t I be strong enough to stand up to my father, stand up to Amadeus?

I came to a dead end. I jerked to a stop, my heart racing. Thrusting my fingers through my hair, I gripped the strands, a whimper falling from my lips. I couldn’t be trapped already. Not yet. I wasn’t ready.

“Time’s up, little blondie.”

I swung around to face Amadeus, sucking my lips into my mouth and biting down so he wouldn’t hear me crying. I was terrified. What was he about to do to me? Was he going to rape me like my father did my mother sometimes? Even now, I could hear her small cries of pain bouncing off the walls of my mind. I didn’t want to end up like her.

He took a step toward me, and I scrambled back, my chest heaving. A malicious grin curved his lips. My heart was damn near pounding out of my chest. “Scared, Lilly?”

“Don’t call me that,” I whispered, my voice shaking.

A spark lit up his eyes that made him look threatening and deadly. My stomach churned. “Why? Too personal,Lilly?” he mocked. He reached forward and played with a piece of my blonde hair, his eyes locking on mine. “Thing is, little blondie, you don’t get to choose what I call you.” I gasped when he suddenly latched his hand around my throat, squeezing until I couldn’t breathe. I clawed at his wrist, but he didn’t even flinch, even as I drew blood. In fact, making him bleed only seemed to spur him on more.
