“Bring him in,” I said, helping Lillian back onto the rug in the middle of the floor. I yanked my shirt over my head and balled it up. Laying down, she used it as a pillow, shutting her eyes with a low moan of discomfort. I ran my trembling hand over her shoulder, wishing like hell I could take away her pain and make it my own.

“No food,” she mumbled when Ezra walked in with Solomon. He had a couple of grocery bags. We all frowned at her.

“Little blondie—”

She shook her head. “Don’t feel good.”

I swallowed thickly, truly fucking fearful for the first time in my life. I crouched in front of her. “Baby,” I said softly, “I need to get you to the hospital.” I didn’t want to let her go, didn’t trust anyone else with her, but I couldn’t help her.

That knowledge fucking ripped me open. I was bleeding out for her, and she had no fucking idea.

She shook her head. “No. Just you.”

I brushed my fingers down her cheek. “I won’t let them take you from me, little blondie. I promise. But you need medical care.” I swallowed thickly. “I can’t help you, baby.”

She looked up at me through teary eyes, breaking the little bit of heart I had left. I gently pulled her into my arms, and Solomon snatched up my shirt. “Is she going to be okay?” he asked as Ezra pushed open the door, holding it open for me.

“I hope so, kid,” I told him. And I really did. I hated that I didn’t know for sure.

I was terrified I was too fucking late to save her. And if I was, I’d never be able to live with myself.

Amadeus

Lillian passed out on the way to the hospital, and despite my numerous attempts to try to get her to wake up, she didn’t budge.

I was on the verge of panicking.

When I got to the hospital, I parked right in front of the ER doors, trying not to lose my shit. Ezra was already running over to me from his parking spot, no doubt wondering what in the hell was going on for me to fly in here like a bat out of hell.

“She’s unconscious,” I told him as I lifted her from the car. “Park it please.”

I didn’t wait to hear his response. I knew Ezra wouldn’t let me down. No matter what I requested of him, he normally complied, just as I did for him. I could never repay Ezra for all the shit he did for me, no questions asked, no arguments or complaints given.

I rushed through the two sets of double doors and to the check-in desk. “Hi, how can I—”

“She’s unconscious,” I told the nurse, my words rapidly spilling from my lips. “Please help her,” I begged.

She quickly called out some kind of code. A moment later, two nurses—one male and one female—rushed out of the double doors with a stretcher. I gently placed her on it and made to follow them, but another nurse came out of nowhere, stopping me.

“What the fuck?!” I exploded, shoving my hand through my hair. “I promised her I wouldn’t leave her,” I snapped at her. “Get the fuck out of my way.” I wasn’t in the mood for this shit. I needed to be with her. If she woke up without me, she would panic. I couldn’t break my word to her—not after everything she’d been through.

“Sir, she needs help, and we can’t have you in the way while we stabilize her. We’ll call you back as soon as we can,” she assured me. “Please just take a seat.”

She turned on her heel and followed the other two nurses and my woman through those double doors, ripping her from me. I dropped into a chair and dropped my head into my hands. Ezra and Solomon dropped down into chairs on either side of me.

“Everything okay?” my little brother asked me.

“I don’t know,” I whispered. Leaning back, I sighed and laced my fingers together on top of my head, gripping my strands and tugging to the point it hurt. Tears burned in my eyes, but I refused to let them fall. “I don’t fucking know anymore.”

“Mr. Stone?” the nurse from earlier called as she came out of the double doors. I lurched to my feet and quickly made my way to her. She smiled at me. “She’s asking for you.”

I glanced at Ezra over my shoulder, but he waved me on, his arm curled around my little brother’s shoulders. I took that as my sign that he had Solomon, and I quickly followed the nurse down all the winding halls until we finally reached Lillian’s room. She was sitting up, an IV hooked into her elbow, and a blood pressure cuff was wrapped around her upper arm.

“Amadeus,” she rasped, looking relieved to see me. She was still extremely pale, but she looked more aware than she had earlier today.
