She’d fallen asleep—for real this time.

I shook my head. Silly girl. But I knew she was still exhausted after everything she’d been through, and this pregnancy would only make her more tired as her body began to adjust, her hormones fluctuating and forcing her body and emotions to change.

Ezra chuckled quietly. “Looks like we need to hurry.”

I nodded in agreement, eating my food a little bit faster. “Any word on her family?” I asked him.

Ezra shook his head. “Silence. And they haven’t been home.”

I clenched my jaw. I didn’t like that they weren’t accounted for. That meant I couldn’t predict their next moves, which put Lillian at a greater risk.

Would we ever get a fucking chance to rest? I felt like we’d been fighting for our entire lives at this point.

“I need her married to me as soon as possible,” I said. “Which means I need to get in that house to get her documents.”

Ezra nodded. “Let’s get these two to a hotel, and then we can figure out how to do that.” My lips quirked, and I inclined my head to him in thanks. If I was going to be stuck in this mess with anyone, I was glad it was Ezra. He would always have my back, and he didn’t think I was insane or being too extreme for wanting to marry Lillian.

I polished off my coffee before stacking all the dishes to make it easier for Mabel to clear the table. Ezra paid the bill, and I left a hefty tip.

“You take care of yourselves out there, you hear me?” Mabel said quietly. “And get the hell out of this town before it kills you,” she instructed, affectionately ruffling Solomon’s hair.

I nodded and then gently shook Lillian awake. We needed to get to a hotel so we could figure our shit out.

Lillian groaned and slowly opened her eyes, looking up at me. “What?” she mumbled.

“Come on, little blondie. Let’s get you in a bed.”

She slowly nodded her head and allowed me to tug her out of the booth. And because I was feeling overly protective of her when she looked so fucking sleepy, I lifted her into my arms and carried her out of the diner to my car.

I quietly crept onto Lillian’s family’s porch, listening for any sign of someone being home, though Ezra assured me it had been dead here since Sunday. When nothing but silence met my ears, I used the key Lillian gave me and unlocked the door, pushing it open.

“Down the hall,” Lillian’s voice came through my earpiece. Ezra was down the block with her and Solomon in the car, and they had me on speakerphone. “Their room is the last door. The fireproof box is usually under their bed.”

When I’d told her my plan of having her marry me as soon as possible, she’d agreed without hesitation. It surprised me a little bit; I still found it shocking that she wanted me after everything I’d done to her, but I wasn’t stupid enough to question it. I’d snatch everything from her that I could at this point.

The only thing she hadn’t liked was me coming into this house when they could come home at any moment. But I was good at sneaking around—used to it, in fact.

So, I’d fingered her until she was coming and all of her protests died on her kiss swollen lips, her mind too blitzed out to worry about me and how dangerous this could be.

I followed her instructions and slipped into her parents’ bedroom. I could barely see a fucking thing. It was nighttime, and the street light barely cast any kind of glow into the room. But I wouldn’t risk using any kind of light in case someone was watching the house.

Biting back a curse, I lowered myself to the floor, looking for a square shape that might look similar to the fireproof box I was looking for. Finally, after my eyes adjusted a bit more, I saw it and grabbed it, silently moving it across the carpet toward me.

I opened it up, chuckling in amusement at their stupidity of not locking it, and grabbed Lillian’s social security card, her birth certificate, and anything else that was rightfully hers, then slid the box back where it was before getting up and leaving.

When I got back to the car and slid into the passenger seat, Lillian leaned up from the backseat and grabbed my face in her hands, kissing me desperately, her tongue tangling with mine. I groaned, my cock hardening. Gripping her hair, I pulled her head back, forcing her to look at me. Her cheeks were red, her eyes a little dazed.

“Told you I’d be okay,” I told her.

She sighed, a small smile of relief tilting her lips. “I know.”

ChapterTwenty-One

Amadeus

Iglanced at my watch, making sure we weren’t running late for our appointment at the courthouse. The local courthouse only did weddings on Fridays. Though I’d wanted to marry her as soon as possible, having to wait until Friday had given me and Ezra time to get an apartment and furniture.
