She laughed. “What did you bring me?”

“Pastries, bite-sized frittatas, crusty Italian bread and honey, and some of that amazing tiramisu.”

“Tiramisu is for dessert. Did they actually have anything left over from last night? I thought I heard them tell the couple at the table next to us that they’d run out.”

“I asked the pastry chef if she could make me some for this morning. I sort of hinted that it was a special occasion.”

“Is it? We’re already engaged, Mia’s got the wedding plans pretty much on track although she did remind me to tell you, you need to get a tuxedo ordered and it had better not be something from a rental shop.”

He laughed as he brought out the food, arranged beautifully on a pottery tray. They began to pick through the offerings, which also included some meats and cheese. She bit into a bit of baked brie and bit down into something hard.

“What the fuck?” she said, fishing around in the brie and withdrawing a stunning replica of a 1920’s monogram crackerjack ring. Only instead of pot metal, this one was made of platinum with a diamond pave rectangle with the initials R and C, interlinked. “Oh my god, Fletch, it’s gorgeous.”

He got down on one knee in front of her. “I kind of fucked it up the last time; I thought I’d do better. Claire Mitchell, will you do me the great honor of marrying me and spending the rest of your life driving me crazy?”

Choking back tears, she nodded, and said, “I will, but only if you have a really good dental plan because I think one of these diamonds just chipped my tooth.”
