David brushed his fingers along Brooke’s cheek. “I’d like that.” He looked up and held Cody’s gaze. “Are we cool?”

Cody looked at his sister and knew the answer before he even asked the question. “Are you happy?”

She nodded.

He looked back at David. “I’m happy for you both then.”

David held out his hand.

Cody took it and shook.

“Thanks, man. That means a lot. You won’t ever have to ask her that again, because you’ll know she is. I’ll make sure of it.”

Cody hooked his arm around Summer and pulled her close. “We should all go out soon.”

“It’s a date,” David said, then checked the microwave clock. “I have to go. I have a shift in an hour.” He kissed Brooke like he wouldn’t see her for a week, then grinned. “Stay inside where it’s warm. I’ll call you later.” He kissed her one last time, gave hera look that said all too clearly he didn’t want to leave, but left anyway.

Cody eyed his sister. “So...”

“So, what?” Brooke poured a cup of coffee, handed it to Summer, then poured one for him, then finally for herself.

Cody stared at his sister. “He’s right. I didn’t have to ask. I see it in your eyes.”

“I’m ready to move on,” Brooke said simply. “David and I have known each other a long time. There’s always been the hint of something there.” She shrugged one shoulder. “Before, I’d say it was more on his part than mine. Last night... it was so easy to talk to him, to be with him. It felt more than right. It felt inevitable.”

Cody knew just how she felt. “I mean it, sis, I’m happy for you.”

Brooke eyed him and Summer over her steaming mug. “I’m happy you two finally stopped circling each other and went for it.”

“We were taking our time,” he defended himself.

“You got burned in the past. You don’t want that to happen again. She’s complicated for you because of Nate and the family. Summer’s wanted someone who is really hers for a long time. She was patient enough to wait for you to stop stalling.”

Summer shook her head. “I didn’t think that,” she assured him.

Brooke rolled her eyes. “Maybe not. But that’s what he did. And now you two are together. I hope it stays that way.”

“Is that what you’re hoping will happen with David?” he asked.

“I don’t have time to play around, nor can I when I have Alex to think about. He misses his dad. He deserves to have a good one. I think David could be good for both of us. Enough that I’m willing to take a chance and go all in. Like you finally did.”

The soft taunt wasn’t lost on him. “We’ve had some difficult and lonely times, you and me.”

Brooke nodded.

“I think it’s time we created the family and home we want.”

“Now you’re thinking right.” Brooke gave him a nod of approval, then turned her gaze to Summer. “You’re good for him. I’m so happy you came and we get to be friends. Maybe soon, we’ll be more.”

“I can never have too many sisters.” Summer went to Brooke and hugged her.

Cody knew the two had grown close over the past couple weeks. This proved it.

And thinking past today and tomorrow and onward, he saw the family and life he wanted, and thought it looked damn good and happy. Him with Summer. Brooke with David. All of them more than friends. A family.

All he had to do was figure out the obstacles and make it happen.
