Not tonight. It was too early for Lucy to have lost track of time.

“Three hours later than it is in Carmel, California,” Summer answered.

“Wait. What are you doing there? Last we spoke about the hotel renovation here, you were in Texas.” Lucy waited a breath, then asked the second question she always asked. “What did she do now?”

By “she,” Lucy meant Summer’s mother.

Instead of going with the bad news, Summer went with the good. “Something amazing happened to me today.”

“You met a guy. Finally.”

Summer grinned, thinking immediately of Cody, then, of course, her dad. “Yes. Two of them actually. And they’re both great. One of them is my father.”

“What?” Lucy gasped. “He finally reached out?”

“No. My grandfather set up this ridiculous DNA test thing to match me with my half sister, so that my dad would finally find out about me.”

“What? Tell me everything.”

Summer gave her a condensed version of the events today.

“That bitch.”

It felt really good to have someone in her life who knew her mother like Summer did and understood without Summer having to explain every tiny detail.

“How could she make you think he didn’t want you when the whole time he didn’t even know you existed? Like... what?” Lucy’s outrage matched her own. That’s why she and Lucy got along so well. They both came from families where they were mostly left to raise themselves.

Lucy’s father had been Jessica’s third husband. Lucy and her dad spent a lot of time together when Lucy’s mom dumped her with him to do whatever she wanted to do, so Summer and Lucy had gotten to know each other very well, and that friendship lasted through the divorce and beyond.

“I know. It’s a lot to process.”

“How do you feel?”

She wasn’t quite sure at this moment. “Stunned. I can’t believe I’m here. In his house. I have my own room. I have two sisters.”

“I mean... I don’t know what to say. Congratulations. You have a whole other family. It’s what you always wanted. Is he nice?”

“He’s great, like I said. Kind. Loving. He’s angry about what my mom did, but he seems genuinely happy to see me.”

“That’s amazing. And you’re staying for several weeks. That will piss off Jessica and give you time to get to know all of them.”

“That’s all I want, to find my place here, so that I can come back whenever I want to see him.”

“Well, don’t worry about any of the property stuff. I’ve got it covered. Just focus on being there, being present with all of them. Wow. My mind is totally blown.”

Summer appreciated that she wasn’t the only one.

“Now tell me about the other guy.”

“What other guy?” she hedged, messing with Lucy.

“Come on. You said, two great guys. You don’t like guys, so tell me about this one.”

Summer couldn’t contain the grin. “His name is Cody.”

“Love it.” Lucy’s excitement was infectious.

“He’s a lawyer and my dad’s business partner.”
