The longer he sat with her, the more reluctant he was to end it and go up to the house where they’d eventually part for the day. It felt too good. It felt so right. And it scared and thrilled him all the while that he felt like he was where he belonged.

Cody leaned in and whispered, “Do you feel it? This thing between us.” He thought she did, but he had to hear her say it.

She nodded. “It’s unexpected.”

“And?”

“Unfamiliar.”

“And?”

“Nice. Really nice.” She turned and smiled at him.

That simple thing made him feel ten feet tall and so damn happy. He wanted to bask in her sweet grin.

She pressed her lips tight. “I’ve never felt... comfortable with men. I’m always waiting for them to reveal what they actually want from me, once the pleasantries are done.”

“If you think that about me, I’ll end the suspense, though I think you’ve found me out already. I want you. It’s that simple. I can’t explain it. I can’t define it. It just is what it is.”

She shifted again and looked directly at him.

He regretted having to take his hands off her.

“I don’t know what to say to that.”

He only wanted to know one thing right now. “Are you open to the possibility of us?”

“I...” Her gaze dropped to the pool deck.

He touched his finger to her chin so she’d look at him. “Don’t overthink it. Just answer the question.”

She took a steadying breath. “Yes. I’m open to... whatever this thing is happening between us.”

A simple agreement, like her smile, shouldn’t make him this damn happy, but it did. They barely knew each other. They hadn’t even kissed. Yet just knowing he was going to have the chance to forge a relationship with her eased him in a way that he’d never felt asking anyone else out. Ever.

It floored him.

“But...” she added.

He didn’t want to hear what came next. “What?”

“I need some time.”

He exhaled his relief. “Take all the time you need.” She’d had a hell of a time since yesterday. A lot had happened. She hadn’t expected to be reunited with her father. Or for the attraction between them to be so intense.

Maybe he needed a minute, too, but it seemed all he could do was lock down her yes to them being more to each other.

“But Summer...”

“Yeah.”

“Don’t push me away. I’m used to getting what I want.” Maybe that was too blunt, but it was true.

“Because you go after what you want.” She knew that about him already. The admiration in her eyes said she liked that about him. Maybe especially because he wasn’t holding back going after her.

He couldn’t wait to share more of himself with her. “I can bepatient for you. I can go slow. But I don’t think I can hold back entirely.”

“We’ve already started, haven’t we?”
