Mom gives me a sideways hug as we watch the bubbling soup on the stove.

“I’m very happy for you Ayaka,” she says and kisses me on the cheek.

“Thank you, Mom.”

My mother and I were always able to talk without saying many words. It was our way. My dad and I are the opposite. We are word city when together, talking for hours about a bunch of random things.

“So. Are you going to marry this one?” Mom asks.

I nod.

“Yes, I just need to wait for a while. He needs to get his business running. I also kind of need to fire him,” I chuckle.

“Well, everything will work out. I know it.”

A couple of hours go by and after playing a few games of cards, Mom starts to make the noodles.

Harry finds me standing at one of the windows looking up at the full moon.

“Ready for the New Year’s, love?” he asks, wrapping his arms around me.

“Yes, I think I am. New start. New life. Looking forward to spending it with you, love.”

Dad comes around and claps Harry on the shoulder.

“Look at that moon,” he points to the glowing orb in the sky.

“Bright. I’ve never seen the moon this bright before,” Harry comments.

“Sometimes love makes us see things in a different lens,” Dad says, then gives Harry and me a wink then goes away, probably to find Mom.

“Poetic,” Harry says, and we laugh.

Mom calls us over to the dining room where the Soba is on the table. We take a seat and dig in.

I look over at Harry to see how he’s getting on, eating with chopsticks, and my eyes widen when I see he’s doing just fine.

“Where did you learn how to eat with chopsticks?”

“You’re not the only one who eats Japanese food.” He winks.

“Or as we call it–food,” I chuckle and Harry gives a smile.

I’ve never felt so good in my life. My life is perfect. I have the greatest parents. The most beautiful assistant turned lover and love of my life. I’ll have to find another assistant, but now with everything that I have, it feels like a task I’ll have no trouble with.

After we finish eating mom gets up from the table and calls out from the living room.

“Come over to the TV guys, the countdown has started!”

We rush over to the living room where the countdown to the New Year has started.

“5. 4. 3. 2. 1!” we all shout. “Happy New Year!”

The clock rings midnight and the new year has started.

We all cheer and start hugging each other. This year I get to kiss my lover on the lips on New Year and everything feels perfect. After giving Mom and Dad and a few others they’d invited over a hug, I take Harry into the bedroom and pull him in for another kiss.

“I love you, Harry.”
