“Is this real?” She asks.

I take a deep breath and consider the question. I was never someone who believed in love at first sight. Logically, I figured it was impossible, but not even two whole days with Erin, and I’m ready to fully give her my heart.

So maybe love isn’t logical. Maybe something happens on a chemical level between two people who are meant to be.

“Yes, Erin. This is real. You’re mine, baby. And I’m yours.”

Erin beams at me, and it warms my soul.

“Great! This will make it less awkward when I meet your friends and family. Knowing we’re… official.”

“Yes, I’m officially yours.”

She snuggles into me. I rest my chin on her head, and we watch the sun come up across the empty walls of her room.

My woman next to me. We’re on the same page. This amazing feeling is scary because it’s new, but not scary enough for me to run away. It feels like the adrenaline of getting a new tattooI’m jumping into something I can’t back out of but feeling absolutely sure this is the right decision.

Fuck, this feels right.

Chapter 8: Keiko

ErinandIholdhands as we walk to the park where my friends are playing softball. I figured this would be an excellent time to introduce everyone to her officially.

When they’re too tired to tease me about having a girlfriend.

The sun is streaming onto my black hair, making it almost too hot to touch. I should’ve worn a cap. If I had one.

Erin is wearing one of those giant Kentucky Derby hats. Wide rim, ribboned and straw-coloured. She pairs it with a brown knee-length T-shirt dress with a small white belt and loafers. She looked perfect.

As we walk down the sidewalk, the only shade being every fifth tree hanging over the road, I start thinking about something we haven’t said to each other.

The “L” word.

I meant it when I said that she was mine and I was hers. But saying that doesn’t feel the same as saying I love you. Not that I don’t. I do. I have no idea how I went from ‘I’m probably going to be alone forever’ to ‘I want to tattoo your name over my heart,’ but I have.

All I know is,thisis what I want. She is what I want. It’s a feeling deep in my bones. And whatever we’ll do together—any battles or wins—she’ll be worth every moment.

Romance has never really been my strong suit. And, I‘m about to blurt out that I love her when I hear Daisy’s voice. We’ve gotten to the park, and the game has already started.

“Dammit, Sam!” she yells. I have to hold down my laugh as we walk into the stand and sit next to her.

“Run! Dammit! Run!” Daisy yells.

Sam hesitates at second base, unsure if he should run to third. He chooses to stay, and the play is done. The game moves on, and the next batter comes to the plate.

Erin leans into me and says, “I thought you said Daisy was shy.”

“Oh, I forgot to mention there is a slight caveat. When she gets excited, she’s like an energizer bunny. And when you mention sports, she turns into a feral rabbit.”

Erin nods, then grins when Daisy tosses her popcorn at the fence.

Finally, she notices us sitting next to her. Her smile is huge as she looks at us, her eyes going to our clasped hands.

“Oh, my God! You two came together. That’s so cute.”

Her voice completely changes. She goes from raspy aggression to bubblegum cheerleader.

Daisy reaches into a small pack beside her and brings out a couple of cans.
