“Where are they? Daisy and Sarah.?” I ask.

“Oh, yeah, they called while you were at Erin’s. They stopped at the grocery store. Pregnancy cravings have kicked in.”

“How long does it take you to eat a bag of chips?” Surely he’d have finished by the time I was done with my… alone time.

Daniel tosses the bag of chips away and smirks.

“Are we going to talk about my eating habits, or are we going to talk about the hot new neighbour?”

I gasp. Something like jealousy hits me, and suddenly I want to sock him for even thinking of Erin as ‘hot.’ Even though she is.

“What?” I ask defensively.

“You like the neighbour, don’t cha?” He grins, “You’re smiling. You never smile.”

I touch my lip. I didn’t even realize it, but he’s right. I’ve had a bit of a grin since I met her.

“I’m not talking about it,” I say, getting up and walking to the fridge.

“Why not? It’s not like any of us are getting any.”

“I don’t see how that’s relevant.” I find some milk in the fridge and get a glass.

I down the milk, and that’s when Sarah and Daisy walk in. A bag in each hand loaded with random groceries.

“Hey there, people,” Sarah says in her usual blunt greeting.

“Hey,” Daniel grunts.

Sarah and Daisy put their bags on the table, and Daniel moves out of the way.

“So, what did you get?” I ask.

“Who cares what they got?” says Daniel. “Keiko’s got agirlfriend.” He points to me, and I blush.

“Oh, my God! Who is it!” Sarah says, smiling from ear to ear. “Tell me everything.” She sits on the table, and I shove Daniel, who chuckles and heads to the couch.

“I… I,” I stutter.

I’m usually pretty open with my friends. If they ask me about something, I’ll tell them. But I’m reluctant to tell them about Erin. I don’t know why. Something about the newness and uncertainty of it has me staring at Sarah, hoping she’ll take the memo and back off.

And she does.

“Fine,” raising her hand and getting up, “You’ll tell me when you’re ready. Or when I can’t take the suspense anymore.” She grins, and I grin back.

Sarah and I are complete opposites. She’s bubbly yet serious. Tall and likes turtlenecks and nice shoes. Whereas I shop second-hand and like leather jackets, ripped jeans, fishnet stockings and graphic T-shirts. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Sarah in anything that didn’t have a calculated hole in it. Either in the back or the front of a dress or shorts. And I don’t even think she owns a pair of jeans.

Sarah has confidence spilling out of her. I prefer to be the woman you don’t notice. I’m not hard on myself. I just don’t like attention. Sarah doesn’t crave it, but she likes it.

Daisy starts putting the food away, and like the mother duck that Sarah is, she sits her down and puts it away for her.

“You’ve been walking all day. You should sit down. Let me take care of this.” Daisy sits on the couch, and I can tell by the look on her face that shedoesappreciate not having to do anything. Maybe she’s softening her stance on not being helped.

“Are we still having dinner?” I ask, remembering the reason I left Erin.

“Yeah, yeah. I’m making it. Be at my place in half an hour,” Sarah says, “Are you coming over, Daniel?”

Daniel pops his head up from behind the couch.
