Yeah, he replies. After tonight...I don't know if I can take it slow.

I bite my lip, my body still pulsing with euphoria. Then I type out a response.

Starting tomorrow, I'm all in, I tell him.I'm ready for this to be real. And I'm so, so ready to get in bed with you again.

Chapter fourteen

Jesse

Iwakeupthenext morning fully prepared to introduce Piper to the rest of my family.

She's still sleeping when I wake up and head downstairs, eager to get in touch with Sadie. Sadie first...and once I've got Sadie on my side, Caleb will just have to come along for the ride. Plus, Sadie is my twin and we've always been close.

She'll trust that I'm not doing the wrong thing.

I grab my phone and head out onto the patio, dialing Sadie's number as I bask in the morning sun. She answers after a few rings, her voice groggy from just waking up. I feel bad--I know better than to do this, since she's been up lately with her baby--but I'm anxious to make this happen.

I want this to work out for me and Piper.

It has to.

"Jess? What's up?" she says.

"Sadie, I need your help," I say, knowing that she'll be intrigued.

"With what?" she asks, her tone already shifting from sleepy to curious.

"I met someone," I say, drawing out the words for effect.

"No way!" she says, her voice suddenly full of excitement. "Tell me everything!"

"Okay," I tell her. "But you have to promise you won't freak out...and you have to keep this secret."

Then she sounds a little freaked out. "Okay..."

"It's Piper," I blurt out.

Graceless.

Not great.

The silence hangs on the line between us, and for a second I think she's going to hang up on me...

...but then she gasps. "Jesse Michael Hart," she says in a whisper. "You arenot."

"I am," I tell her. "And she's here."

"Jesse!" she snaps. "What the hell?"

"And she's pregnant."

Sadie's gasp is almost cartoonish, complete with the sound of her slapping her hand over her mouth. "Everything okay?" a man's voice--Eli--sounds from the other line.

"Everything isnot okay!" Sadie practically shrieks before being shushed by her husband.

"Lily is sleeping," he coos. "I just put her down."

I chuckle at the cute domesticity, weirdly eager to experience it myself. Suddenly, I'm thinking about where in Fern Hollow me and Piper will settle down--how I can make a living, how I'll support them...where we can live where Piper has someplace to paint.
