Logan was studying me, his grin twitching like he might chuckle again.

Taking a sharp breath, I calmed myself. I had always been this high-strung. Maybe I just needed to take a leaf out of Logan’s book and chill out.

“So, I didn’t look that bad up on the stage, did I?” I asked with a smile, more to convince myself than him.

Logan exploded into a laughing roar again, and I couldn’t help but join him.

“My friend,”—he gasped between fits of sniggers—“you were a disaster up there. I’m pretty sure everyone thought you were about to have a stroke or start changing into a werewolf.”

His amusement was infectious, and soon we were both chuckling, me forgetting that we were hiding in the institute to save ourselves.

He slapped a hand on my shoulder. “So, instead of freaking out, we should be talking about how we’re going to make that minx pay for making you embarrass yourself in front of everyone.”

“That’s not the point, Logan,” I began, but he cut me off.

“The point is, we’re here, and we’re in this mess together. I have no idea how to describe it, but I’m fucking infatuated with Kitty Kat.”

I just stared at him, considering his words. Of course, he was. Logan had always been the one to fall first for girls and fall the hardest, but he’d never admitted it before, making me wonder if he was pinning too high hopes on a relationship that I had no idea could work out.

“Now tell me,” he insisted. “Does she give good head?”

It was my turn to explode into a laugh at his one-track mind.

CHAPTERTWELVE

KAT

When I emerged from my bedroom, the morning light was already peeking through the hall windows, and waiting just outside my door with a beaming smile was Louise. She looked like she’d been waiting there for a while, bouncing on her toes in excitement to see me.

“What are you doing here?” I asked, attempting to suppress the whine in my voice.

“Morning, bestie,” Louise responded, sweeping her hair behind her ear and grinning. “Thought we could walk to breakfast together.”

I swallowed back a groan. Figuring it was too early to argue, I simply nodded and strolled alongside her.

As we made our way to the dining hall, Louise launched into a detailed account of her daily classes and how she had bathroom duty that night. She then hinted that I should join her to keep her company.

“I’ve got something on tonight.”

“Oh, what are you doing?”

I pretended not to hear her question as we arrived at the dining hall, where I quickly scanned the room for any of the Fathers. They weren’t there, and I breathed easy. With our bowls of cereal and milk, we took our seats at a round, four-seat table. Louise was in high gear, not wasting any time diving into her food and conversation simultaneously. Her voice filled the dining hall, drawing a few glances our way. She kept calling me ‘bestie,’ her voice ringing with an enthusiasm that sounded painfully forced.

I cringed each time she did.

“Keep it cool, Louise,” I murmured, trying to steer her away from drawing too much attention. “You sound like you’re trying too hard.”

With a light laugh, she nodded. “I’m going to grab some toast.” She wandered off to the buffet table, striking up a conversation with another girl.

The moment she turned her back, I took the opportunity to slip away, a sigh of relief escaping as I made my escape, not hungry anyway. And after a restless night, I wasn’t in the mood for company. As I trekked toward the kitchen, the tension of yesterday hung in the air.

A brunette, her hair in a long plait, who could easily be the same age as me at twenty, ran up to me, her eyes like round disks.

“There’s someone here to see you out front,” she said, breathless.

My brows furrowed in confusion. A visitor? My mind immediately leapt to Emma, and my heart beamed. I sped right past her, my lips already curled into a grin at how hard I’d hug her. I had a thousand things to tell her.

Stepping into the bright daylight of the open door, my blood ran cold.
