“I loved that,” I whispered to him.

“You like it hard,” he stated, more matter of fact than a question, as if he knew what I preferred. “I knew you would.” He said the last few words with a knowing grin, which I absolutely adored.

Soon enough, I was wrapped in a towel, his heated look never leaving me. He grabbed another towel to dry himself off, as much as one could while wearing a drenched priest’s robe.

“Let’s move,” he instructed, and in a swift movement, we hurried to his room, where I had fresh clothes sitting on the bed, waiting for me. “Quickly get dressed, then let’s try to return things back to normal for everyone else at the institute. But you will now spend your nights in my room.” That was more of a command than a question.

“Okay.” That wasn’t an argument I intended to have because I wanted that more than he realized.

“I’ll be back in a moment.” He vanished, and I used that moment to finish drying my hair and get dressed in the panties and chocolate-colored dress that cinched in at my waist and like the others at the institute, over-emphasized my chest. I suspected Mason selected this outfit on purpose.

Next thing I knew, Mason was back, changed into a different robe, drying his hair with a towel as he stepped into the room. Bridge and Logan were on his heels, their eyes searching mine as if they knew what Mason had just done to me in the bathroom.

“How are you feeling?” Logan asked, his fingers tenderly tracing my cheek. Bridge was there too, his hand on my waist, drawing me against his side. “You look gorgeous, but you need to eat something.”

It was a strange sensation to be cared for so deeply by these three men who were dealing with such a dangerous situation themselves. But I also needed them to trust me if we were going to try to make something of our chaotic situation.

“I appreciate the protection,” I said, turning to face all of them. “But you need to trust that I won’t reveal what I know about you to anyone.”

“Kat,” Bridge said. “It’s not about us not trusting you. It’s about keeping you safe.”

My safety was not my main concern. It was their lives, their futures, their freedom. And if trusting me was what it took to ensure that, then I was willing to fight for it.

“Guys,” I said, my voice steady. “I can take care of myself. What I can’t do is stand by and watch you walk into danger. I am part of this now, whether you like it or not.”

The heated thickness in the room was abruptly cut short by a deafening sound that echoed in the room. The window shattered, glass splinters flying across the room like deadly rain. Something whizzed right past my ear and slammed into the wall.

A bullet.

I screamed, diving to the ground and covering my head. Logan threw himself at my side, Bridge and Mason also dropping low. Fear drummed through me, a wave of terror crashing over my mind.

“What the fuck?” my head spun that somehow my stepdad had come back to get revenge.

“Everyone, stay down!” Mason barked, already moving on all fours toward the broken window, peeking out from the corner.

Logan and Bridge dragged me to the farthest corner from the single window in the room.

“Who the fuck was that? I see no one out there,” Mason muttered.

My blood ran cold. I crouching down on the other side of the bed with both men pressed on either side of me, keeping me protected.

Mason scrambled back toward us, whispering. “We need to go out there and scour the grounds. And we need our guns.”

“Guns?” I swallowed hard because reality was bitch-slapping me.

Mason was already dragging a duffle bag out from under his bed. He quickly unzipped it, revealing a mountain of rifles and Glocks.

God, did I really know these men?

The chilling reality sent a shiver over me. Their past and their enemies had finally caught up with them.

“Wh-What do we do now?” I asked, my words quivering.

Mason turned to look at me, his gaze hard, his eyes darkening.

“Now, we hunt down the culprit. While you, my gorgeous girl, help us.”

“Anything.”
