I wanted to return the favor.

“Let me take care of you after your long day of cleaning. What do you say?”

Her eyes brightened. “I think I like the sound of that.”

My phone beeped and she resumed getting dressed. She sat and pulled on her sandals.

“So, I’ll be here at seven. Is that okay?”

I nodded.

“Okay.” Her eyes held mine for a second, smile bright.

She stood, straightening her dress. “It’s my turn to prepare a dish for a family in need.”

“Are they alright?” I frowned.

“Mostly. Just overwhelmed and stretched thin because they just had triplets.” She squirmed. “Can you imagine that?”

I chuckled. “One child is a lot. But three? Wow.”

She bit her lip. “Yeah, babies are a lot to handle.”

Her sad look unfurled something inside me. I stood and rounded the bed to pull her into my arms. She melted against me, sighing.

“You’re doing a great job, Ava. I’m sure everyone appreciates what you can offer.”

“Thank you.” Her voice came out muffled.

I let her go so I could cup her face. Warm eyes blinked up at me. I kissed her lips softly.

Her palms flattened on my chest as she kissed me back.

“You have to get to work, right?” I murmured.

“Shoot.”

But she didn't pull away. If anything, she was clinging to me more.

“Shoot is right,” I said in a teasing tone.

That snapped her out of it. She stepped back and eyed me but her lips twitched.

“I should go.”

I’ll miss you.

I swallowed those words and said instead, “I’d like to help with what you do.”

Her eyes widened. “You want to cook or do grocery shopping for families in need?”

I nodded.

A big smile covered her face. “Oh, okay. I’ll add you to the rotation.” She looked around the room before facing me. “I have to go.”

“Okay.”

We shared one more kiss before I could let her out the door.
