“Let me rephrase. Idon’t likewhat you’re implying.”

Danny raised a hand. “Forgive me. I know you’re a good girl. It’s just hard to believe that even a man like Wesley Taves would be able to resist a sweet little thing like you.”

A sweet little thing? This guy can’t be for real.

“Not to mention, I don’t think I could blame you for being interested in a billionaire. Even if he is old enough to be your father.”

“Wesley isnotold enough to be my father.”Okay, maybe if he was a teen dad, but come on.

“A little defensive, are we?” Danny gestured to the bartender for another drink. “Listen, I wouldn’t blame you if you had a crush on the guy. He’s in good shape. And money talks, even I know that.”

I couldn’t help but laugh. Danny probably thought I found him funny, but I really only saw him as the punch line of bad joke. “Danny, what are we doing here?”

“What do you mean?”

“You didn’t come here to talk to me about Mr. Taves, did you?”

“I thought we were calling himWesley.”

I huffed and crossed my arms across my chest. I’d made sure to wear a loose shirt that didn’t show off my curves and very little makeup. But I had to look like I tried at least a little. “Whatever. You know what I mean.”

Danny tilted his head to the side, so much gel in his hair that not a single lock moved. “No, you’re right. We’re not here for that.”

I felt his hand brush up against my knee.

“You’re telling me you haven’t noticed how I’ve been trying to flirt with you?”

I tightened my hands around the cup of club soda. “I don’t flirt with people I work with.”

“Please. We both know that’s not true. You’ve been playing hard to get for months now. I was surprised the way you finally agreed to meet was through our parents.”

Playing hard to get? That’s rich.

His hand slid up my knee to my thigh and his grip intensified. “Look, I know tension when I feel it.”

I smacked his hand away. “Don’t touch me.” It was reflexive. I hadn’t meant to be so harsh, but I couldn’t help it. More than ever, my body was only meant for me and people I invited to touch me.

And that was not Danny Morden.

“Ohhh, you’re feisty. I like that.”

Suddenly, he grabbed me by the waist and pulled me closer to him.

“I’m serious, Danny. Don’t fucking touch me.” I shoved him off, accidentally clipping his chin with my knuckles.

Danny flinched away, rubbing his chin with his hand.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you. I just really don’t want to be touched.”

He licked his lower lip and laughed darkly. “I get it.”

“Look, Danny, I’m giving this date a try because my parents asked me to. It’s not…there’s nothing here, in my opinion. I don’t mean to be rude or anything, but I don’t want to lead you on.”

Danny narrowed his eyes. “You don’t want to lead me on? What the fuck do you think you’ve been doing the past three months? Hell, even longer.”

I felt the blood rushing from my face. “Excuse me?”

Danny grabbed my bar stool and pulled it toward him, entrapping me on both sides with his arms, one on the bar and the other on the back of my chair. “Listen to me, Cara. With all the shenanigans you and yourfriend, Mr. Taves, have been pulling, the sellers are pissed. I think they might back out if someone points them in the right direction.”
