Cara shook her head. “I’m staying with my parents. They’d be furious if they saw me with you. Especially since…” She gestured between us sadly. “You know.”

“Who cares what they think?” It came out angrier than I had meant it, but I couldn’t help it. Their little girl was a woman. I couldn’t believe they hadn’t yet forfeited their right to controlling her.

“You do! At least you did last week when you broke up with me.”

“I told you, it was a mistake.”

Cara laughed bitterly. “Still. Besides, you were right. I can’t lose them right now. I need people to be there for me now, more than ever. And family won’t leave me behind.”

“You have plenty of people on your side. I’m still here. I’m still your business partner; you know I’m good for the monetary support.”

Cara looked away, a breeze flipping some of her chestnut hair out of her eyes. “I’m not talking about the daycare.”

I stared hard at her. “Then what are you talking about?”

She hesitated. My mind ran a mile a minute, wondering what she could possibly say. Was she sick? Was something wrong? “I’m pregnant, Wesley.”

Chapter33

Cara

Wesley’s jaw hung open. I hadn’t intended to tell him when I decided to run after him. It felt impossible to avoid revealing the truth. It just slipped out.

But now that I’d said it, his silence was making me regret it.

“It’s yours, of course.”As if that weren’t obvious.

Wesley’s expression didn’t change, as if he was too stunned to speak.

“I know that must be a lot to take in.” I wrung my hands nervously. “I’m going to keep it. I don’t expect anything from you, so there’s no pressure for you to participate or…yeah. I just felt you should know.”

His eyes grew sad. “You don’t want me to be a part of our child’s life?”

“No, no. I’m just saying that you don’t have to. I know it’s a lot and this wasn’t planned. You already have Lucy and Lisbeth and your business and you don’t need another thing on your plate, so —”

“A thing? It’s nota thing.” Wesley started to smile. “You’re having my baby, Cara.”

“Right, but you asked me to leave. So I understand if you don’t want to have anything to do with me. With us.”

“No! Of course, I —” He grabbed me by the arms, eyes shining with tears. “You seriously want to have my baby? Even if we weren’t together, you’d go through with it?”

I flushed. “I know it’s crazy, but it just feels right.”

Wesley beamed, shaking his head in disbelief. “I don’t even know what to say.”

“You don’t have to say anything. You can think it over. Sleep on it, you know?”

“No, I don’t have to. You have no idea how happy I am.”

I couldn’t’ believe my ears. “Really?”

“Yes, I can’t imagine anything more wonderful. More perfect.” Wesley ran his hands through my hair and kissed my forehead. “I love you, Cara.”

My whole body went numb.Love? He loves me?I simultaneously wanted to jump for joy and also burst into tears. How could he continue giving me whiplash like this? Making me feel so high, only to drop me so low, again and again. “It’s not just me now, Wesley. It’s a baby, too. You can’t just say things on a whim.”

“It’s not a whim. Of course, I mean it. I can’t stop thinking about you, ever since you left last week, you’re always on my mind. Even before that. I haven’t been sure about many things in my life, but my feelings for you…” He swallowed. “For our baby. Those feelings are clear.” Wesley nodded determinedly. “I love you.”

I couldn’t say it back, though I felt it deep in my bones. In my belly, where the fragile product of our love was growing. I couldn’t say it back because I no longer trusted Wesley like I once had. “I don’t want you to leave.”
