Still, silence. Filled with anger and hurt.

I had never felt so powerful in my life.

“I’m going to go after what I want.” I started for the door, Katie smiling at me with pride. But before I passed her, I decided that a little more salt to the wound was just what the doctor ordered. “And one other thing. I’m pregnant.”

Dad paled and Mom gasped, clutching her hand to her heart.

“And it belongs to Wesley Taves. If I’m not welcome here, that’s just fine. But I’ve made my choice. My life, first and foremost. Notyour ideaof what’s best for my life.”

Katie grinned. “Fuck yes, sis.”

“Katherine, stayoutof this!” In his rage, Dad had crumpled the newspaper in his hands. It was comical.

I held up my hand. “I’ll be leaving now. If you want to be a part of my life — and your grandchild’s life — you know where to find me.”

And with that, I left without so much as a backward glance.

Chapter34

Wesley

When the doorbell rang, I had no idea who to expect. Probably an Amazon delivery or a politician.

Cara was probably the last person on the list. Though it was clear she wasn’t wearing any makeup or had done much with her hair, she was stunning as ever. And already glowing. “Cara, what a surprise.”

“Did you mean it?” she blurted.

I stepped out onto the front step, closing the door behind me. “What?”

“You really want me at the mediation?”

“Yes. Of course, I meant it.”

She inhaled sharply and then nodded. “Then I’ll be there.”

I gaped. I hadn’t expected her to answer me so soon. Just the night before as she walked away from me, I’d prepared for it to be the last time I’d ever see her. Now, she was agreeing to be a part of one of the biggest, most stressful parts of my life thus far. “Are you sure?”

“Are you backing out?”

“No, no. Of course not.” I couldn’t keep myself from smiling. “How are you feeling?”

Cara’s eyes widened. She glanced down at her frame, looking no different than it had before, but knowing that soon it would change. And if she would let me be a part of her life, I couldn’t wait to see her body grow with our child. “Oh, I’m okay.”

“Good.” I wanted to offer her all the help I could give. One thing at a time, Wes. Lucy first. Then everything else.

Cara peered over my shoulder, trying to see through the thin crack in the door. “Is Lucy home?”

“She is. Do you want to see her?”

Her lips curved upward. “I’ve missed her.”

My heart swelled. “She’s missed you.”

Suddenly, she stepped back. “It’s…I should wait. Until things are more settled.”

I wanted to refute her, but I understood. Our lives were all hanging in the balance. We had both recently accepted a life without each other, only to find ourselves cosmically drawn together once again. As adults, we could handle the whiplash. But Lucy was just a child. She needed to be protected.

Cara looked back at her car, the hazards blinking. “I should go.”
