I’d count on that as long as I could.

Days at MediaDeckwere typically fast-paced and I had little time to think about anything but the business. I often attended back-to-back meetings or I was on calls and answering emails.

However, on that particular day, I was preoccupied with thoughts of Lucy and Cara. I wondered what they were doing, if Cara had made Lucy a nutritious lunch, if Lucy was having fun, or if Cara was truly as wonderful as she seemed. I was zoning out at meetings and on work calls. Even during lunch I was distracted and barely ate my salad.

I glanced at the clock. A little past four. I started daydreaming about arriving home after my day at work. I hoped when I opened the door I would be greeted with Lucy’s huge grin and stories of her fun-filled day. And if I was being honest, I wondered if Cara would be happy to see me…

Knock, knock.

I looked up and smiled. “Jenson! What’s up?”

Jenson Styles was my closest friend. He also happened to be the CFO of MediaDeck. Though we worked closely together, we had less time to shoot the shit than we used to. I always appreciated when he dropped by.

“You busy?”

I leaned back in my chair. “Nope. Come on in.”

Jenson closed the door behind him and came over to perch on the corner of my desk. “I wanted to hear how this morning went.”

“Oh. Good, I think.”

“Good, you think. Wow, that’s fascinating.”

I chuckled. “Well, I don’t know. I only was with her about fifteen minutes before I left for work.”

“But how do you feel? This is your first nanny in forever.”

I appreciated Jenson’s ability to keep tabs on me. “I’m nervous.”

Jenson rolled his eyes. “I knew it.”

“What? Wouldn’t you be?”

“Sure, but my kids have had the same nanny since they were babies.” I couldn’t help but be a little envious of what Jenson had. Jenson had twins, a boy and girl, just a bit older than Lucy, and had been with his wife, Kerry, since they were freshmen in college. That was the kind of life I always saw for myself. “If Eliana left, I think we’d all have a mental breakdown.”

“Well, Cara is on a two-month contract. I know that Lucy is aware it’s short-term. So we’ll be ready when she leaves.”

“What if you want her to stay longer?”

I shrugged. “Another contract.”

Jenson scratched his stubbly chin. “This is a nanny we’re talking about, Wesley. Not a lease on a parking spot.”

“Well, I don’t know. That’s a bridge we’ll have to cross when we come to it.”

Jenson looked away for a second. “What’s she look like?”

I raised an eyebrow. “Pardon me?”

“You know what I mean. Is she cute? Easy on the eyes?”

I shook my head. “That’s a dangerous game, Jenson, and you know it.”

“Oh, come on, Wesley. You must have noticed.”

I felt hot under the collar. I would not let myself consider the attractiveness of Cara Smith. At least not actively. “And you know I don’t believe in conflict of interest.”
