The conversation was interrupted by my phone buzzing in my pocket. I checked to see who was calling. It was Danny Morden. “I’m sorry, I have to take this. It’s my realtor.”

Wesley’s eyebrows jumped, his interest piqued. “It’s no trouble.”

I got up and stole into the hallway to answer the call. “Hello?”

“Cara! How’s my favorite client?”

“You know, it’s quite late to be calling me.”

“I’m sorry, but I thought since we’re old friends —”

“What’s going on? I’m sort of in the middle of something, so if you could be quick.”

Danny cleared his throat. “Alright, alright. Sorry to interrupt. I just have some good news.”

I took a deep breath of anticipation. Since I was able to get the loan started for the building, I knew things would start moving faster.

“The owners will accept your offer.”

“Really? That’s great!”

“If you drop the contingency.”

My joy turned to disappointment. “Oh…”

“Trust me, Cara, this would be asteal. It’d be totally worth it.”

“So if we drop the contingency, that means no inspections?”

“Exactly. You can get those done once the building is yours.”

I pursed my lips, thinking for a moment. “So they’d take my offer right now.”

“We’d be in and out of escrow before you know it.”

Suddenly, I heard a voice right behind me. “Don’t do it.”

I turned to find Wesley towering over me.

“You need the inspections.”

I pulled the phone away from my ear. “Have you been listening to me?”

“That place is going to eat up all your capital if you don’t take proper precautions. Tell him the contingency stands.”

There was no room for argument when it came to Wesley Taves. I wanted so badly to accept the deal, but then I remembered — it was his money. And if I wanted his investment later on down the road, I had better make him happy in this process.

Mom was right. They do whatever they need to get what they want.Even if that was listening in on private phone calls.

Danny’s voice came through the phone. “Cara?”

“I’m not taking the deal.”

Wesley nodded appreciatively. As much as I hated to admit it, I liked the feeling of his approval.

“What?”

“You heard me. The contingency stands.”
