I blushed and my body heated. If Wesley Taves knew he was the newest addition to the list of things that got me going, I was in big trouble. “I thought it was honorable. Anyhow, I get to dinner, and he’s dressed in a nice suit and wearing campaign buttons on his lapel. Really into it. A little too into it. He spent the whole date trying to convince me to vote for the guy, Redmond Sax.”

Wesley laughs. “Oh no.”

“The kicker is, I remember Redmond Sax’s name, but I don’t remember the name of the guy I went on the date with.”

“I guess he did his job.”

I rolled my eyes. “I guess. Anyway.”

Wesley considered me with a lopsided smile. “Tell you what, I’ll pay you back with my bad date story over a glass of wine. How does that sound?”

Fucking amazing. “I could do that.”

“Perfect.”

* * *

“She didnothave index cards.”

“She did. Swear to God.”

It took a full glass of wine to get Wesley to actually start talking about his date. I had sucked mine down quickly due to my nerves from sitting alone with him at the kitchen island, sharing a drink. How is this happening?

“And the questions were…intense.”

“What do you mean byintense?”

Wesley let out a big sigh and reached for the bottle of wine. “That’s going to require another drink.”

“That bad?”

“Yes Cara, that bad.”

I loved the way my name sounded coming out of his mouth. Every time he said it felt very intentional. I couldn’t help but look at him when he said it. This handsome, successful, sexy man sayingmyname so intimately?Impossible.

Wesley started to pour me a glass but stopped short. “Will you be okay to drive?”

“I can have one more.”Careful, Cara.“Maybe just half a glass. So I’m good to drive.”

The wine sloshed into my glass. True to my instructions, it was just half a glass. “I’d be happy to call you a car if not. Or you can even stay over here if you need. That’s always an option.”

“I think Lucy would be bummed if there was a sleepover going on that she didn’t know about.”Sleepovermade it seem like we’d be sleeping together, in my mind. I tried my best not to blush at the thought.

Wesley chuckled. “We’d have to make it up to her.” He took a long sip of wine.

“So. Index cards.”

“Oh, yes. Just stuff you probably don’t even learn about a person until…I don’t know, the fifth date, if I can help it. Although it’s been so long, I’m not sure I even know how it works anymore.”

“You don’t date a lot?”

Wesley’s eyebrows jumped. “No. No way. No time for it.” He looked into his glass, swirling the wine. “And if I’m honest with myself, no energy, either.”

“Mmm. I get it.”

He smirked. “You’re way too young to get it.”

I winced internally. That certainly reminded me of the place I had in his mind.
