“What I mean is…you should have the energy to date and find what you like. What you’re looking for. Have fun. You know what I mean. Am I sounding really old?”

I laughed and shook my head. “It’s nothing I haven’t heard before. I’m just not too interested in ‘exploring.’ I feel like I know what I want and I’ll know when it comes along. You know?”

Wesley observed me for a moment. I held my breath. It looked like he wanted to eat me up — in the best way possible. The thought of his mouth on me made me shiver. His voice came out huskier than usual. “Well, what is it you want?”

“Something easy.”

He cracked up, throwing his head back, showing off his prominent Adam’s apple. “Don’t we all.”

“Don’t laugh!” I smacked his knee. “You know what I mean!”

“Well, relationships aren’t easy, Cara.”

“I know that. I just meant it should be easy compared to any bullshit I’ve had to put up with.” I pressed my lips together. “Sorry. I promise I don’t swear in front of Lucy.”

Wesley leaned back in his chair. “I work in corporate America. My ears aren’t that sensitive.”

I smiled sheepishly.

“I’m sorry you’ve had to put up with guys being idiots. I know I definitely doled out some of that bullshit in my twenties. You deserve better.”

Our eyes met, but I looked away quickly. I couldn’t get lost in the deep brown depths of his eyes. “I think byeasy, I just mean someone who’s willing to show up and give their whole self as imperfectly as they are, just how I would. I just want to find someone who sees me. Do you know what I mean?”

He nodded. “I do.”

This was the sorriest “sleepover” I had ever been to. It was me who was bringing down the mood, so I decided to lighten it back up. “I can’t imagine you have too much trouble out there.”

“How do you mean?”

“I don’t know. Maybe I’m making an assumption about people with money —”Shit, this wine. It’s like truth serum. “Sorry, that’s so impolite of me to —”

“No, you’re not wrong. You definitely get a lot of attention when your net worth is updated on the internet daily.” Wesley shrugged. “It can be the wrong kind of attention, though.”

“Well, it’s not just the money.” I was digging myself a deep grave. “I mean, you’re a good-looking guy. I’m sure you get attention when you’re out and about, too.”

Wesley smiled and tilted his head to the side. “I could say the same for you. Not the guy part, but…”

I let out a loud, awkward-sounding snort to cover up how nervous he was making me. I was good-looking to Wesley Taves? Not possible. “It was just an objective observation.”

“Oh, of course. Mine was, too. Purely objective.”

Just two people very innocently pointing out each other’s attractiveness. Nothing suspicious going on at all…

“But see, let’s say I separate out the gold diggers and find maybe a handful of women that are actually well-intentioned, not just in it for the money and the looks, as you objectively pointed out.”

“You’re not going to let me live that down, are you?”

“Absolutely not. It’s too fun to see you squirm.”

This man will be the death of me.

He continued, “I’m still dating kryptonite because…” He gestured for me to fill in the blank.

I had no idea what he wanted me to say. “Because…?”

Wesley frowned. “I’ve got a kid.”

My jaw fell slightly. I never understood why that drove some women away from men. It was an obvious sign of compassion and care. Who wouldn’t want a man who had opened his heart like that?
