No doubt my parents had gossiped with his after church. “It’s just been a week but we’re getting on really well.”

“Who’s the family? Maybe I know them.”

I let myself relax. This will be fun. “I’m nannying for Wesley Taves.”

Danny’s beady eyes bugged out of his head. “What?”

“Yeah, we talked a bit after you left the showing. He was looking for a nanny and it just sort of made sense.”

“No wonder you came up with this capital all of a sudden. Ha! You’ve got Taves on your side.”

I glared at him. “I don’t think it matters where the capital came from.”

He leaned back in his chair and crossed his leg over his knee, drawing attention to his crotch.Eww.“Okay, yeah. Let’s get down to it. Don’t want to keep you too long. Just long enough.” He winked.

My mouth moved into a tight smile, but it didn’t reach my eyes.

Danny cleared his throat. Down to business. Finally. “I know you told me you didn’t want to accept the offer without the contingency. I get it. It’s a risky move.”

“Right. Exactly. I don’t want to have to deal with cleaning up somebody else’s mess.”

“I get that…but…I want to warn you there’s another potential buyer.”

I observed him for a moment. Wesley had warned me about this. His words echoed in my head.“People trying to make a deal their way will lie to get what they want from you. Be careful.”

I’d be careful. I’d make him proud. “Really.”

“Yes, and they’re considering buying without a contingency.” Danny lifted his chin. So smug, the bastard.

“Why didn’t you tell me about this the last time we talked?”

“Well, I can’t help a new buyer being interested. That’s not something within my control.”

I zeroed in on Danny. Wesley had reminded me,“Stay firm. Up the offer if you have to. I don’t doubt that place is in rough shape. You’ll be able to counter with less.”I’d do just that. “I can’t sign the deal without the contingency.”

Danny’s face fell.

“I’ll throw in another, say, thirty thousand to the offer.”

“Jeez, are you made of money, Cara?”

I laughed. “No, just got Wesley Taves on my side, remember?”

Danny grimaced. “Right. Well. That’ll get you pretty far, then.”

“That’s my final offer. I’m not accepting any deal without inspections. That’d be…” What was the word Wesley had used? “Ludicrous.”

Danny nodded reluctantly. “Okay. I’ll see what they say. But don’t be disappointed if it falls through.”

Wesley’s voice popped up again in my head.Don’t show your emotional hand. Be indifferent.

I shrugged. “Then you’ll find me some place else.”

He tried to smile but it came out more as a sneer.

“It’s your job, right?”

“Yes, of course. I’ve got plenty of spaces that would be perfect for you, Cara.” He ran his hands up his thighs and I couldn’t help but feel the suggestion of that sentence had to do with what was between his legs.
