“Holy shit.”
“I know.”
“Wow!” Katie twisted my wrist from side to side, examining the bracelet with wide eyes.
The day after February fourteenth, while Lucy was at school, I’d driven out to the Bronx to visit Katie between classes. I hadn’t taken off the bracelet since I’d received it, and I’d barely slept that night. I couldn’t get Wesley off my mind. And I knew I had to talk to someone about it.
“Wesley gave this to you?”
I nodded solemnly.
“Just out of the blue?”
I pursed my lips. I hadn’t told anyone about our affair. Katie was the only person I knew I could confide in who wouldn’t judge me. “I need to tell you something.”
Her eyes bugged out. “I knew it. I knew something was up.”
“We’ve been…sleeping together.”
She covered her mouth to avoid gasping loudly.
“For a couple weeks now.”
“Cara! This is so exciting! He’s totally obsessed with you!”
I jerked my hands down into my lap so she couldn’t stare at the bracelet any longer. “I don’t know, Katie. He’s rich. He probably gives gifts like this all the time.”
“Oh, come on! You’re being completely idiotic.” She pulled out her phone and started tip-tapping away. “Where’s it from?”
“Cartier.”
After just a few more seconds, she held up the phone, showing off a listing for the very bracelet I was wearing. “Yeah, I’m sure he just drops over a grand on all his friends.”
I touched the butterfly charm, remembering how he’d said it reminded him of me. “He’s a billionaire, Katie. That’s a drop in the bucket.”
“Cara, if he’d spent any more on you, he would’ve been showing his whole entire ass that he’s obsessed with you.”
I laughed, going red in the face. “I don’t know about that.”
“And you’re totally obsessed with him.”
“Katie…”
“Just tell me, how’s the sex?”
“Katie!”
“Let me fantasize!”
