Lisbeth be damned.
Once Lucy had settled and I got her set up in front of the television with all the snacks her heart could desire, I found Cara sitting at the foot of the front door, trying hard to polish out a scuff made by the sole of Lucy’s slipper.
“Don’t worry about that, Cara.”
“Oh, I don’t mind.”
“Seriously, you’ve done more than enough.”
Cara dropped the rag she was using into her lap and sighed. “Is she doing okay?”
“For now. I’m expecting it’ll be a long night.”
Cara looked up at me with a trembling gaze. “I’m sorry.”
I frowned. “Why are you sorry?”
“I feel like I got too involved or —”
“No, no, don’t be sorry. Not at all.” I sat down beside her and touched her arm. “You were great. This would have gone way worse without you. Trust me.”
She smiled meekly. “I’m sad to hear it could have been any more difficult.”
I nodded. It could always be worse when it came to Lisbeth. But that didn’t matter now. I had other things on my mind. “Cara, I need to ask you something. It might be bad timing, but I can’t…not say this.”
Her eyes widened.
“I want to know if you’d let me take you on a date.”
Cara was quiet.
“I know. Whiplash…but —”
Cara threw her arms around me. “Yes.”

“You look uncomfortable,” Katie said. “Are you uncomfortable?”
I pulled at the dress that was tight around my waist. “Kind of? This used to fit, I swear —”
“Doesn’t matter. Here, try this.” Katie held out a cream-colored sweater dress with a turtleneck.
I ran my hand down the soft fabric. It was very much Katie’s style. Neutral and loose. “Isn’t that a little modest? I still want him to be into me.”
“Girl, you’ve been fucking him for weeks.”
“Iwasfucking him. Past tense.”
“You don’t think you’ll hook up tonight? Please. He asked you on a date, Cara. He wants you. Now put it on!” Katie shoved the dress into my hands.
I rolled my eyes but smiled. I was grateful for Katie’s support and advice. I had been a wreck ever since he had asked me out, elated he’d changed his mind, yet terrified he might change it back again.
Focus on the positive, Cara. Don’t stress.
“Where’s he taking you?”
