I pulled off the ill-fitting dress and slipped on the one Katie had given me. “I don’t know. He said it was a surprise.”

Katie sighed dreamily and threw herself down onto my bed. “Oh my God, he’s totally going to sweep you off your feet, Cara.”

I had been trying not to get my hopes up. Doing so was the preamble to having my heart broken. And Wesley had already built my hopes up once. I couldn’t afford to fall apart again.

I glanced into the mirror as I smoothed the fabric down my waist.

“Oh, C…you look beautiful.”

“Yeah?”

“I mean, you would look beautiful in a trash bag, but…”

“You’re overdoing it, Katie.”

My sister shook her head. “I’m just being honest with you.”

I didn’t want to be conceited, but she was right. The cream contrasted with my chestnut hair, made my brown eyes look warmer, and the material hugged my curves in all the right places. And I wanted nothing more than Wesley to admire my body and remember what it did to him.

“He’s calling.”

I spun around — my phone was buzzing on the bed beside Katie. “Give it to me.”

Katie smirked playfully and answered before handing it over. “Hello, this is Cara’s phone…hello, Mr. Taves!”

I lunged for the phone, but she rolled away from me just in time.

“Oh, you’re running ahead of schedule? You’re outside right now?”

We played a game of keep-away that felt desperate. “Give me the phone!” Every time I thought I had it in my grasp, Katie was able to jerk away.

“Yes, I’ll let her know.” Katie hung up the phone and then held it out to me. “He’s outside.”

“I got that, jerk.” The reality washed over me suddenly. “Oh God, he’s here. He’shere.”

Katie ran her hands over my shoulders. “Relax, Cara. This night is all for you, okay? Just remember how fortunate he is to have this time with you.”

That seemed like a ridiculous concept. Wesley was a billionaire business mogul. He could have any woman on the face of the earth. Not to mention his drop-dead good looks. So why would he want me?

While I stood frozen in place, Katie pushed my coat and purse into my hands. “Don’t keep Wesley Taves waiting, darling.”

I took that to heart and nearly sprinted out of my bedroom, shrugging my coat on, and trying not to trip in my high heels.Deep breaths, Cara. He’s lucky you’re giving him another chance.

As soon as I got to the front door and grabbed the handle, I stopped.Breathe. He wouldn’t have asked if he didn’t want to do this.

If he didn’t feel he had something to prove.

I lifted my head high. The handle felt like it was searing my hand.Just open the door.

As I stepped through the front door, I felt like I was moving through a portal. From anxious girl to confident woman. Even if I didn’t quite buy it, I could pretend.

And when my eyes landed on Wesley standing on the sidewalk, holding a humongous bouquet of flowers, I didn’t shy away. I smiled, big and bold. “Hi.”

“Hi.”

We were both quiet as I descended the stairs toward him. He looked edible. Unsurprisingly. He always did. But even more so now. His blonde hair was tousled to perfection and his face was clean-shaven. He had opted for a long black coat with a white scarf hung around his neck, as if we were going to the opera.

I couldn’t resist kissing him as soon as he was within my grasp. I grabbed onto the scarf tightly, getting onto my tiptoes, kissing him longingly. Hopefully.
