“I didn’t know they were going to attack you like that.”

Still, nothing.

“Wesley, please say something.”

“What would you like me to say, Cara?”

My lower lip trembled. “I don’t know. Just something that lets me know you don’t hate me.”

Wesley lowered his head. “Of course, I don’t hate you, Cara. How could I?”

Thank God.“I don’t know. It feels like I just walked you into an execution without realizing it.”

“No, you didn’t.” He swallowed. “I just don’t think you should have chosen me over your parents.”

“You don’t want me?”

Wesley shook his head, a lock of blonde hair falling onto his forehead. “No, that’s not what I said. I just…we haven’t known each other that long. They’re your parents. You need them. Trust me, I wish I still had people in my life that close to me. I don’t think I’m worth throwing all of that away.”

“Oh, Wesley…” I unbuckled my seatbelt and slid my hand around his back, pulling my chest toward his over the center console. “I’ve never made my parents angry in my life. If I’m going to start, I don’t think there’s a better reason than falling for someone.”

Wesley’s distraught expression shifted, a small smile on his lips. “You’re falling for me?”

I pulled back shyly, not meeting his eyes. “Well. Yeah. A little. Not to scare you.”

He touched my waist. “It doesn’t scare me at all.”

We leaned our foreheads together. Our lips were so close we could kiss, but neither of us moved to do so. A different kind of connection was forming. Deeper. More intimate.

“You shouldn’t sacrifice your life for me.”

“Wesley, my life is just beginning with you.”

A breath caught in his throat.

I closed the space between us with a delicate kiss to his lips. Then another one, longer and deeper. His hands tightened on my body. We had come so close to losing each other. Now it was clear he didn’t want to let me go.

I slid my hand down his chest, pulling on the fabric of his shirt to bring him closer to me. I wouldn’t let my parents ruin this for us.

“Cara.” My name, whispered desperately into my mouth.

I wrapped my arms around him, drawing him as close as possible. We had been tangled together in lust so many times. But this moment was different.

Something deeper was growing between us. No longer just our bodies eager to join together, but our souls seeking one another, having bonded through shared difficulties.

Wesley’s hands gripped my hips, trying to pull me onto his lap, but the clunky architecture of the car prevented it. “Can I come upstairs?”

“My apartment’s a mess.”

Wesley pushed his face into my neck, kissing me, nipping and sucking, marking me as his. “I don’t care. I need you. Need to make love to you.”

Fucking was just lust.Making lovewas more. And for him to say it out loud made everything clear.

I was so glad I chose him. I refused to lose Wesley, not after our story had just begun.

“Okay. Come upstairs with me.”

It took a few minutes before either of us made a move to leave the car, too caught up in our foreplay. We were reluctant to draw apart.
