What’s happening to me?

Danny stared to explain things simpler, but slower. My stomach continued to churn. “You can just show me where to sign. I don’t need to…I’ve already read the contract.”

“Okay. Whatever you say, Cara. You’re the boss.”

I tried not to outwardly cringe at the forced smoothness of his voice. Under the table, I felt the toe of his show rest against my ankle, as if it was an accident. But knowing Danny and knowing what Danny had been wanting of me for a long time, I knew it wasn’t an accident.

Just initial and sign…initial and sign…

Finally, we got to the signature on the document. I slammed down the pen. Something was not right in my stomach. It was more than just this latte.

I was starting to feel sick.

“Well, now that that’s done —” I started to rise from my seat.

Danny grabbed my wrist. “Hey, wait, let’s catch up for minute. I have a half hour before my next appointment.”

I didn’t have the mental fortitude to refuse at this moment. My mind was solely fixated on the way my stomach was churning. I sank back into the chair and tried to train my eyes on Danny’s face.

Danny started to talk. Any time he asked a question, I merely answered with a yes or a no.

A wave of bile rushed up my throat. I covered my mouth, thinking for a moment I might projectile vomit across the table and right into Danny’s lap. Would that be so bad, if not for my pride?

“Soon, you know, we won’t be working together. And maybe we can find a way to meet up as friends…maybe more. What do you say?”

I frowned. “What do you mean?”

“Damn, do I have to spell it out for you?” Danny chuckled. “Alright, fine. You’re an attractive girl. I think we should get a drink some time. Be awesome together.” He started to reach for my hand across the table. “What do you say?”

Before he could touch me, my stomach flipped once more.I have to get out of here.I pulled my hand away from his and leaped to my feet, covering my mouth.

I think I’m going to be sick.

Danny called after me as I rushed through the café to the bathroom. I shoved open the door and didn’t have time to lock it before I hurled the few contents of my stomach into the toilet.

This can’t be from the latte,I thought on my third round of puking. And even though Danny makes me sick, I don’t think it’s literal.

When I finally had a moment to catch my breath, throat burning and brain blazing with questions and confusion, it hit me.

Could I be…pregnant?

I shook off the thought quickly. I was on birth control. But Wesley and I didn’t take any other precautions. And I, admittedly, had forgotten to take my pill a few days here and there, but…

Shit.

After cleaning up in the bathroom, I hurried back out to fetch my stuff, making an excuse to Danny that a stomach flu was going around Lucy’s school (it wasn’t) and that I’d be in touch (I wouldn’t).

He was less concerned that I was ill and more concerned if I had spread it to him, immediately pulling out a bottle of hand sanitizer.Jackass.

I practically sprinted to the nearest drug store. I’d never bought a pregnancy test before, never even suspected. With my few previous partners, we’d always used condoms. With Wesley, we hadn’t from the beginning. And once I knew that feeling, there was no way I was going back.

As I walked the test up to the counter, all I could think about was Wesley. How would he react? Should I even tell him? Or should I just…

“Oh, congratulations.”

I stared at the cashier. She was a middle-aged woman with red streaks in her hair, wearing an excited smile that faded quickly when she saw my expression.
