And that was it. Cara was gone.

I had no idea if I would ever see her again.

“Daddy!”

I turned around. Lucy was standing in the doorway, headphones on, iPad in her arms.

“Why are you outside, Daddy?”

“I’m…I was just…”

“Where’s Cara?”

I took a deep breath. I had another heart to break. And I wouldn’t even have the chance to tend to my own broken heart until much later, after Lucy was in bed.

Would our lives ever be whole again?

Chapter29

Cara

Katie rubbed my back as we waited. “Do you think it’d be weird if I went and played with one of the bead mazes?”

I glanced over at the low table with wires bent in different configurations, beads hanging from them to be moved all around. “It’s meant for kids, Katie.”

“So? A bit of nostalgia never killed anyone.”

I tried to smile.

“I thought you’d find that funny.”

In better circumstances, I would have. But I had been crying for nearly two days straight. From the moment Wesley told me things were over, I’d lost it. I didn’t even have the chance to tell him that our connection had created something unexpected, yet beautiful. He’d already decided I wasn’t worth his time.

So I made the impulsive decision that he didn’t deserve to know about our baby.

I regretted it from the moment I left, wondering if that piece of information would have made him change his mind.

But I wanted him to need me in his life simply forme. It was clear that I was not enough.

I could respect his need to focus on Lucy. I could respect the notion that we should take some time apart. However, I couldn’t respect him breaking my heart again. After everything — all the vulnerability, after what had gone down with my parents, after the connection we had shared.

He just decided on his own to be done.

That was Wesley Taves. I realized that now. Money could make a person feel like they controlled you. Didn’t matter how good of a father he was, or how much he encouraged you, or how giving of a lover he was in bed.

A billionaire would always be a billionaire. And I was just a silly girl, not worth his effort.

“Cara Smith?”

Katie and I looked up to the nurse calling my name. She wore a hijab and a bright smile. “You can come back now.”

I got to my feet nervously. Katie held my hand tight and squeezed. I could hear her without her having to speak:It’s going to be fine.

And by God, I had to believe that.

I told Katie immediately after leaving the Taves house. She was over at my apartment almost immediately and had not left since. It was like a very sad slumber party. She was the one who’d encouraged me to make an appointment with an OB to confirm everything.

“You need to verify the rapid test and find out your next steps, Cara.”
