Silence fell between us again, and I closed my eyes while listening to the noise of the crickets outside chirping merrily, persistent and hopeful in attracting their perfect mate. Mine lay dozing again next to me. If only it were as easy for me as singing a song.

When I woke, the bed beside me was empty, and the sheets were cool to the touch. Alina had left the bed some time ago.

Rubbing the sleep from my eyes, I swung my legs over the side. With my pants abandoned in the living room, the only stitch of clothing available to me was Alina’s dressing gown, left haphazardly on the floor. It was a tight fit, to say the least, and barely covered my dignity. I didn’t care. Hell, I would walk around naked if I knew Alina wouldn’t mind.

I found her in the kitchen, boiling water on the combustion stove that sat in the brick fireplace, a pan of eggs frying on the other side. She was barefoot and dressed in only a T-shirt and panties, with her hair a sexy, fucked-hard mess down her back. Fuck me, if the sight of her this way didn’t provoke the caveman in me, wanting to carry her back to bed and claim her all over again.

I rested my shoulder against the doorframe, crossed one ankle across the other, and enjoyed the view.

“You’re still such a pervert.” Alina didn’t even turn to know I was there.

That thought made me smile. Alina was aware of me like I was of her, and feeling that connection was evidence we’d finally come home. Even after the distance of time, while everything else in our world tilted and morphed into something unrecognizable, maybe nothing had changed for us.

I still felt the want and need of her, and even with the uncertainty of what the future held for us, the feeling that our bond was still there gave me hope I was probably yet to earn.

ChapterTwenty-Eight

Alina

Like my body was a compass, and he was my true north, I felt him,

“Can I tell you about another fantasy I’ve had?” I turned to face him, casually resting against the doorframe in the kitchen. I baited him, waiting for the sparkle in his eyes to dilute to desire. “There is this one where my Romeo comes down the stairs, dressed in only my dressing gown, and stalks toward me, all sexy and manly.”

Callum took the bait, moving into the room as described, and I almost faltered at his progression. The temptation to burst out laughing at his frame, squeezing tightly into the fabric, was almost too much to bear. But then my eyes found his, and the laughter died in my stomach. The intensity of his eyes fixed on me as he pulled me into his arms was more than anything I could imagine.

“And he—”

My breath caught when Callum placed a delicate kiss on my collarbone, setting my skin alight at his touch. Fighting for composure, I persisted with teasing him.

“And he doesn’t ogle me in the doorway like some sort of creeper.” I deadpanned and swatted his backside with the spatula. “See, you’re still a pervert.”

He rolled his eyes, and I couldn’t help but giggle.

“So, what are we doing this morning?” he asked.

“Wearen’t doing anything. Once the road is cleared,Ineed to go to town for supplies.”

Callum released me and folded himself into a chair at the table while I made us both a cup of coffee. Black, since I had no damn milk.

“So, what? You’re done with using and abusing me?”

Putting the cups down, Callum swiftly wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me into his lap. “Oh no, I’ve not nearly finished with you yet.”

At my statement, he reached around and jiggled the table. “Yeah, okay. You want me to give you another screaming orgasm right here on this table?” He patted it like I wouldn’t know which table he was talking about.

Tapping the end of his nose, I smiled at him. It hadn’t been what I meant, but it wasn’t a bad idea. “I still have a house that needs work, and you’re the man tasked with the job.”

“You don’t think I can handle both jobs, baby?”

“I’m more than aware you’re capable, Callum McArthur. I’m just not sure I am right now.” An involuntary yawn broke from my mouth before turning into a coy smile to accentuate the point.

I watched as his expression grew serious. “D’you want to talk some more about that dream you had?” His hand reached up to tuck a piece of my wayward hair behind my ear. “’Cause, to be completely honest, it kinda scared the fuck out of me.”

“It was just a night terror, Callum. And it’s over now.”

“It wasn’tjustanything, Alina.”
