“Question,” Dodger yells over the talking. Everyone turns to him. “Actually, a couple.

“First, we don’t have a club president or VP. How should we handle that?”

“Well…” I wrack by brain. Do our bylaws mention anything about how to handle something like this? I don’t remember reading anything. “I think we should take the night, think over who we want for a president and VP. Tomorrow, we’ll put it to a vote. Agreed?”

“Sounds good to me,” Smoke says, hissing slightly as he shifts on the stool.

“Excellent.” Dodger nods. “Next question. How can we convince Doc to come and look over our injuries?”

“Call him. If you explain what happened and tell him everything has been taken care of, just like I promised, he’ll come over.”

He nods and turns to walk over to the end of the bar to use the phone.

“Fix.” He looks at me. “Do you think you can take a few guys and get the yard cleaned up?”

“No problem.” He looks around the room, nodding toward a few men. “We’ll get it cleaned up in no time.”

“Great.”

Dodger walks back over and strides to Smoke’s side. “Doc was a little hesitant at first, not that I blame him, but after I assured him he wouldn’t have any trouble from anyone here, he agreed to come over.”

Nodding, I glance around the room. Fix and a few guys have gone outside. But the ones who remained relaxed over a drink, the mood in the room seeming more tranquil than it has in months. I figure this is as good a time as any to sneak away, my thoughts turning to Jenny.

“I’m taking off, guys,” I say, then look at Smoke. “You good?”

“Yeah, brother. You go on. We’ll see you tomorrow for the meeting.”

Nodding, I wave to everyone else and make my way outside. The minute I step out, I take a deep breath. It truly feels like a huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

Smiling, I swing a leg over my bike and head down the drive. It’s time to see my girl.

ChapterTen

Jenny

“I’m here, Mama. Do you need any help with dinner?” I call out, setting my purse on the table by the front door.

When I was in my mid-twenties, I moved into a house not far from my parents. It wasn’t much. Just a little two-bedroom. But it is mine. It’s also nice being close to my parents. I love being around them, so I couldn’t imagine moving far away.

My brother also has his own place. A townhouse close to downtown. He wanted to remain in the same town as his family and club. Just not that close. We liked to tease each other about it, but at the end of the day, we’re still over at our parents’ house more often than not.

Not that they complained, especially our dad. With how protective he’s always been, I’m sure he would have preferred we never moved out at all. But I think us being close made him feel better when we left home.

Our mom, on the other hand, felt it was time for us to spread our wings and supported our decision when we each made up our minds to move out. Much to our father’s frustration.

Tonight, just like most nights, I’m meeting my brother over at our parents’ house. The only difference is my mind is on someone else.

Something is going on with Maverick. I can feel it. I don’t know what, but I could hear the stress in his voice on the phone last night. Before we’d hung up, I made him promise to call me tonight. Every time my phone rings and it’s not his number, my stomach drops.

With each hour that passes, the dread inside me continues to grow. My mind keeps playing out the worst-case scenarios, all of them ending in me never knowing what it would feel like to kiss him, touch him, have him hold me close.

“Hi, baby.”

Glancing up, I smile as my mom walks out of the kitchen. “Hi, Mama.” I give her a big hug, sighing at her familiar warmth. After a day of worrying, this is exactly what I need.

“Is that Jenny?”

I hear my dad’s voice boom from the kitchen. Smiling, we walk in. My brother sits at the table, cold beer in front of him.
