But why didn’t he tell me who he was? Finn Buckley watched me grow up. He had a front-row center seat to my awkward teenage phase. But he never showed any romantic interest in me before last night in the bar. So why the hell was he all too willing to get me into bed last night? What changed?

Before I can open my mouth to ask another question, Finn chimes in. “Can you please put down the gun and come inside? I’m sorry, Ma, but someone forgot to tell me you got an alarm system. I triggered the alarm when I came into the house.”

“Oh, Lord above. I’m so sorry, sweetheart. The sheriff suggested we get an alarm system so it would be easier to alert the police or the paramedics if something happened to your father.”

“Well, that was mighty nice of him, Ma.” His eyes flick toward mine as he lowers his arms to his side. “Are we good now, sugar?”

The deep rumble of his voice wraps around me like a warm blanket. I should cuff him, take him to the station, and find some way to get him as far away from me as possible. But I highly doubt Finn’s parents are going to press charges against their own son.

Finn winks at his mother. “Marissa and I were getting reacquainted with each other. This was all a misunderstanding. We haven’t seen each other in years. It’s only natural that she didn’t recognize me.”

I quickly holster my weapon as he takes a step forward, wrapping his around my shoulder. All the color drains from my face as I try to pull away from him, but he only pulls me tighter into his side.

The chemistry sparks between us for the second time as his mother eyes both of us skeptically. “I’m going to go inside and get us something to drink. Finn, can you please get your dad’s chair out of the trunk and help him inside?”

“Sure thing, Ma. Right after Officer—”

“Deputy,” I interrupt him, causing a bright smile to spread across his face.

“Deputy Flores and I finish our conversation.”

“Make it quick. It’s warm, and I don’t want your father trying to get into the house himself. You know he’s just as stubborn as a mule.”

“That he is,” he responds, brushing his lips against the top of my head, causing a shiver to run through my body. We both watch as his mother heads into the house. A few minutes later, the blaring alarm silences.

“Finally, I’m able to think.” Finn groans softly.

I squirm from his grasp as I try to step away from him, but he grips my arm tightly.

Before I realize what’s happening, his lips crash into mine once again. The fight for dominance has begun. He uses his free hand to pull my entire body flush against his. I gasp in surprise as he groans, sliding his tongue into my mouth before deepening the kiss. I give myself over to the pleasure, allowing my emotions to take over for a few moments before my brain catches up with what’s happening, and I bite down hard on his lower lip. The metallic taste of his blood fills my mouth as he pulls away from me.

“You bit me!” His thumb brushes against his lip, checking for blood.

“Well, next time, you’ll think before kissing someone without their permission,” I growl, wiping my mouth with the back of my hand. “Was this just a big joke to you, Finn?”

This is what I needed. I needed to keep the walls around my heart firmly in place. Sleeping with Finn was a mistake, even more so because he wasn’t some random guy I met at a bar. I didn’t care about Finn Buckley. And I don’twantto care about him either.

“There’s nothing fun about the time we spent together, sugar.”

“Stop calling me that.”

He rolls his eyes at me, and I briefly imagine pulling out my gun and shooting him in the leg. I have probable cause; he broke into the Buckleys’ house, after all. Well, not technically because he had a key, but I could always leave that and the fact that he’s their son out of my report. Maybe if he apologizes for lying and being a complete asshole, I’ll pretend this never happened, but based on the smug look on his face, I doubt that’s going to happen.

“Now that you know who I am, what do you think my chances are of getting a repeat performance?”

“If you want a quick death, try kissing me again. Finn, I don’t do repeat performances.”

“And why’s that?”

“Isn’t that the point of a one-night stand? They’re supposed to end after one night.”

“Is that a hard-and-fast rule? Couldn’t you make an exception for me?”

“No, but it doesn’t matter because it can’t happen again.”

His finger wraps around a strand of my hair, sending a chill down my spine.

What in the hell is it about this man that causes my brain to take a back seat, allowing my emotions to be more in control? Whatever the reason is, I need it to stop—cold turkey. We may be in the same town, and our parents may be friends, but he’s only in town to help with his father. Then he’ll be on his way back to where he came from and far away from me.
