“Finn!” They both shout at the same time before I break out into a fit of loud laughter.

“I really am tempted to shoot you,” Marissa grumbles before shoving Sutton’s glass toward me on the bar. “Finish this for her. She’s done.”

“I am not.” She reaches for the glass as I grab it off the bar and throw back the last bit as I eye her skeptically. “One tiny sip won’t hurt, Marissa. Besides, what Colt doesn’t know won’t hurt him.”

“I’m on duty, Finn. The last thing people want to know is that I’ve been drinking while putting them in handcuffs.”

I wink at Marissa, my eyes catching sight of Colt coming through the front door, his eyes scanning the room, no doubt in search of Sutton. “I’ve always had a thing for handcuffs.”

“Oh, my God! Do you ever quit?” Sutton cackles loudly, as if she doesn’t have a care in the world.

I don’t know much about the woman Sutton has grown into, but my best friend loved deep. If she had any feelings for the man she planned on marrying, she’d be an inconsolable mess right now. Marissa is right. She more than likely liked the idea of him instead of being deeply in love with him, but who am I to talk? I have every intention of convincing her sister to fall madly in love with me and vow to never leave my side. It shouldn’t be too hard, right?

“Not when it comes to your sister.” I lean forward, resting my elbows on the bar. My eyes remain focused on Marissa the entire time. “Now that you’re home, how about putting in a good word for me with this one? I need all the help I can get.”

“I got your back!” Sutton shouts, no doubt meaning to say it loud enough for me to hear, “Finn’s a good guy, sister. Besides, you already know he’s good in bed. Why not go another round?”

“She said I’m good in bed?” I chime in, a sly smile crossing my face.

“I said no such thing,” Marissa growls before slamming something onto the bar. “I need to get back to work.”

“On the house. Consider it a welcome home present for little Ms. Sutton.” I give her a mock salute before sliding her card back across the bar. “I’m sure I’ll be seeing you ladies around.”

I give Marissa one final look before striding down the bar, grabbing Colt’s attention.

“What can I get for you?” I ask, already knowing what he’s here for.

Sutton Flores is back in town and on the outs with her fiancé. It was only a matter of time before Colt came searching for her.

“I’m here to see Marissa.” He rubs his hand across the back of his neck.

“Are you looking for Marissa or her sister?”

“Sutton’s here?” His eyes widen in surprise before his head turns as if on a swivel, searching for his lady in love.

“At the other end of the bar, but be warned, Marissa gave her Jack Daniels in an attempt to find out why she was back in town. So, in short, she’s drunk.”

He doesn’t say a word, just nods his head before turning on his heels and heading in their direction, but I call his name.

“Colt. Why would you come here searching for Marissa?” I question, wanting to know why, of all the places, he believed she’d be here.

“No reason in particular, just a lucky guess. But a word of advice: If you want her, go get her. You never know when some asshole might swoop in and steal her right from under your nose,” he says with a smile before striding down the bar, his eyes laser-focused on Sutton.

I watch as the three exchange words before Colt bends down and throws Sutton over his shoulder and strides toward the door, catcalls and whistles following behind them. A gentle smile crosses my face at the thought of those two finally getting their chance at happiness. If they could find their way to each other after all these years, there’s a chance the same could be said for Marissa and me. I have to take the first step. I can’t expect fate to do all the work in this situation. It’s time for me to get the ball rolling.

Now that I’ve decided, I scan the room for Marissa, glimpsing her the moment she steps out the door, and it swings closed behind her.

“Shit,” I shout, hopping over the bar and chasing after her. “Marissa!”

Her entire body tenses as she turns toward me. Our eyes lock as a soft smile spreads across her face. She’s just as gorgeous as ever—curves in all the right places, dark chocolate-colored hair I remember having wrapped tightly around my hand as I pounded into her from behind.

“I have a question for you.” I lick my lips as I step toward her, tucking the few strands of her hair behind her ear. “Do you want to go out with me?”

“We went out to lunch the other day.”

“You know exactly what I mean, sugar. I want to take you on a proper date.”

She looks up at me, her eyes shining with an emotion I can’t place, and I stop breathing. It’s as if our entire future plays out before my eyes. The white picket fence, a stupid dog that I’ll complain about owning but secretly be in love with, Marissa round with our child. Everything. I can see it all as if it’s destined to happen.
